POSITION: Process Operator

Company Summary 

Coca-Cola Beverages Africa is the largest bottler of Coca-Cola in Africa, representing 40% of all Coca-Cola volumes across the continent. CCBA is a leading company in Africa’s NARTD (non-alcoholic ready to drink sector). CCBA has a wide presence in Africa, with more than 13,000 staff members.

Essential Purpose Statement 

To offer support services to the Manufacturing division by managing and maintaining the packaging process and implementing the shift production schedule to guarantee maximum equipment efficiency, quality, and performance, in order to meet customer and business needs.

Main Responsibilities & Tasks

Operation Transfer: 

  • Perform a handover with the departing Process Operator to gain insight into the condition of the machine or equipment.
  • Identify and comprehend the difficulties related to equipment and materials from the prior shift.

Readiness for Manufacturing 

  • Confirm the manufacturing schedule.
  • Confirm raw materials needed for implementing the plan.
  • Conduct pre-operational inspections prior to initiating the line.
  • Oversee and verify that the area is free from any residual product run.
  • Oversee and confirm that all changed components, materials, and tools are located in the designated zones.

During the Production Process 

  • Power up the machine following the work instructions.
  • Oversee the machine’s operation (Utilizing the PIMS and POMS) in comparison to the standard.
  • Track inventory levels of raw materials (adhesive, caps, preforms, stickers, shrink wrap, stretch film, etc.)
  • Revise the VPM for the equipment (Machine VPM along with PIMS and POMS).
  • Revise and observe usage trackers
  • Oversee processes and make sure that if any deviations from standards are detected, appropriate action is taken, and escalate to the artisan when necessary.
  • Implement suitable rapid solution procedures.
  • Document the problems that need to be escalated on the PIM and POM sheets.
  • Start the process of generating emergency work orders and offer feedback on their completion (contributes to potential focus during maintenance days).
  • Carry out the schedules (schedules generated from SAP or the ATM displays).
  • Recognize and convey ad-hoc maintenance duties (resulting from completed planned maintenance tasks).
  • Effectively inform the team leader about any deviations.
  • Get ready for transitions.
  • Finalize the transitions.
  • Finalize the transition verification lists.
  • Conduct the Quality inspections.
  • Revise the QMS system as required.
  • Engage in RCA (5Why’s) (for downtime, quality, and changeover)
  • When a breakdown occurs, be present at the machine and assist the artisan in gaining more knowledge about it.
  • Point out personal training deficiencies to the team leader.
  • Oversee and verify that the area adheres to 5S and GMP standards.

Preparation for the next shift

  • Revise VPM in the MDT areas.
  • Procure raw materials for the next shift.
  • Manage and uphold processes to regulate and achieve the daily production schedule.
  • Document pertinent details on all short-interval control paperwork.
  • Conduct necessary quality tests and assessments, and seek specialist quality assessments from laboratory QC Technicians when applicable (Quality @Source).
  • Carry out self-directed maintenance activities as per the maintenance timetable and execute “small” repairs (ATM).
  • Address situational issues and conduct root cause analysis.
  • Offer details and engage in both situational and systemic problem-solving as necessary.

Abilities, Knowledge & Qualifications

  • At least an HND in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or a relevant technical area).
  • A minimum of 2 years of practical experience in a production or technical environment, ideally within a manufacturing or FMCG context.
  • Solid grasp of mechanical and electrical systems pertinent to industrial machinery and process operations.
  • Capability to diagnose issues and conduct simple upkeep on machinery.
  • Readiness to take on shifts and adjust to a dynamic production setting.

  • Effective Communication: The skill to articulate thoughts clearly during discussions and engagements with others, while adjusting the speech’s content to match the audience’s level and experience.
