POSITION: Extension Officer
About The Position
Warc is collaborating with Rainforest Builders to execute the Agricultural Intensification Program (AIP) in Ghana and Sierra Leone. While Rainforest Builders emphasizes reforesting natural reserves, Warc enhances these initiatives by aiding smallholder farmers in shifting to sustainable, high-yield farming methods that harmonize environmental conservation with food security.
In your role as an Extension Officer, you will collaborate closely with the Agronomist to assist smallholder farmers in integrating enhanced agricultural practices, guaranteeing the effective execution of the AIP program. This position is located in the field, necessitating direct interaction with farmers, conducting training sessions, and overseeing farming operations on-site.
Main Duties
Training and Capacity Development for Farmers
- Provide hands-on, field-based training to farmers regarding plantain cultivation, soil health, pest management, and post-harvest processes.
- Assist in establishing demonstration plots, and directing farmers on optimal techniques for land preparation, planting, and input utilization.
- Offer continuous technical support and resolve issues encountered by farmers during the growing season.
Field Activities & Agricultural Management
- Oversee the distribution of inputs, making sure that farmers obtain the correct seeds, fertilizers, and additional resources.
- Perform frequent farm inspections to evaluate crop performance, soil quality, and plant wellness.
- Collaborate with farmers to adopt enhanced agricultural methods and promote regenerative farming practices.
- Aid in pest and disease control, encouraging sustainable approaches like Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
Gathering Data & Oversight
- Collaborate with the M&E team to monitor agricultural productivity, evaluate training effectiveness, and assess the adoption of enhanced practices.
- Keep comprehensive records of farmers, covering profiles, training involvement, and agricultural development.
- Recognize obstacles in the area and suggest strategies to improve program efficiency.
Involvement of Stakeholders & Coordination with the Community
- Serve as a connector among farmers, local collaborators, and the Agronomist to guarantee seamless execution of the program.
- Work together with local leaders and farmer organizations.
- Represent Warc and Rainforest Builders during community gatherings and training events.
Required Skills or Experience
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Sciences, Rural Development, or a related discipline.
- 0-5 years of experience in agricultural training, farmer extension services, or field agronomy.
- Deep knowledge of soil management, crop cultivation, and pest management (experience in plantain farming is an advantage!).
- Practical involvement with smallholder farmers in countryside areas.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities—capable of effectively interacting with farmers and partners.
- Capability to operate a motorcycle and readiness to journey often to agricultural areas.
- Proficiency in English and at least one regional language (Twi).
- Openness to reside and work in rural regions, accompanied by regular field visits.
