Job Vacancy at Food and Agriculture Organization
ROLE: Senior Economist
The FAO, a UN-specialized agency, is in charge of providing international famine relief. FAO seeks food security and regular access to high-quality food for active, healthy lives. The Regional Office for Africa (RAF) manages 47 sub-Saharan nations using Regional Programme Priority Area Initiatives to ensure effective delivery and demonstrate FAO’s influence on agrofood systems transformation in major regional priorities. RAF helps achieve the FAO Strategic Framework 2022–31, which supports the 2030 Agenda by transforming agrofood systems to be more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable for better production, nutrition, environment, and life, leaving no one behind.
FAO uses the four betters to organize its direct contributions to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 (no poverty), 2 (zero hunger), and 10 (reduced inequalities) and support the broader SDG agenda, which is essential to achieving its vision. The four betters show how economic, social, and environmental factors affect agrofood systems. They support a strategic and systems-oriented approach in all FAO operations.
The RAF identifies, plans, and implements FAO’s regional priorities for food security, agriculture, and rural development. It assures transdisciplinary programs, defines regional priorities for FAO, and develops, promotes, and oversees FAO’s strategy in response to regional priorities in partnership with headquarters offices and divisions. RAF also advises on incorporating regional priorities into the organization’s program of work and budget, implements agreed-upon regional programmes and projects, supervises implementation, and highlights issues. The African Union and Regional Economic Integration Organizations are among the regional institutions RAF works with.
The Regional Office promotes regional food security, agriculture, and rural development policy discourse, regional partnerships, capacity building, and resource mobilization.
The Regional Programme Leader oversees the Senior Economist position in the Programme Unit of the Regional Office for Africa (RAF) in Accra, Ghana.
