For the 2024–2025 academic year, international candidates can apply now for a Fully Funded Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme to Study in China. The award is available for PhD and fellowship programs in any subject taught at Chinese universities. The scholarship application deadline is December 1, 2023.

Detailed Description of the Scholarship

The Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong initiated the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) in 2009. This program’s primary objective is to entice the most talented and accomplished students from across the globe to pursue their doctoral degrees at one of Hong Kong’s educational institutions.

Each recipient of the Fellowship will receive a yearly salary of HK$331,200 (about US$42,460) as well as a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,800 (approximately US$1,760) every year for a period of up to three years. These benefits can be used to cover the costs of attending conferences or doing research.

*During the academic year 2024–2025, there will be a total of three hundred doctoral fellowships given out. Additional funding may be made available by the universities that have been selected for the recipients who require more time than three years to complete the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. * The month of September is traditionally the month in which the academic year at Hong Kong’s universities begins.

Nationalities that are Eligible for Admission:

This grant is available to students enrolled in foreign programs from any country in the world.

The following are the eligibility requirements:

Candidates who are seeking admission as new full-time PhD students in any of the following eight universities, regardless of their country of origin, previous work experience, or ethnic background, should be able to apply for the position.

• City University of Hong Kong.
• The Hong Kong Baptist University
• Lingnan University comes in at number three.
• Chinese University in Hong Kong
• The Education University of Hong Kong comes in at number 5.
• Hong Kong Polytechnic University comes in at number six on the list.
• The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
• Hong Kong University

Applicants are expected to display remarkable attributes of academic performance, research capacity or potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

The procedure for applications is as follows:

Before submitting applications for Ph.D. admission to the universities of their choice, candidates who are eligible should first submit an Initial Application online through the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme Electronic System (HKPFSES) in order to obtain an HKPFS Reference Number on or before December 1, 2023, at 12:00:00 local time in Hong Kong.

Under the HKPFS 2024/25, applicants have the option of choosing up to two programs or departments at either one or two universities in order to pursue doctoral studies. They need to ensure that they meet all of the prerequisites outlined by the colleges and programs that they are interested in attending.

Because the application deadlines for some of the institutions may immediately follow that of the Initial Application, candidates should submit their initial applications as early as possible to guarantee that they have ample time to submit their applications to universities.
