Objectives of the Ghana Academy
In 1959, an Act of Parliament set up the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) to support the creation, acquisition, sharing, and use of knowledge for the growth of the country. It is made up of Fellows who have done great things in the Arts and Sciences. It is led by a Council with a President, Vice-Presidents, an Honorary Secretary, and other chosen members.
The Academy’s work is run by the Executive Secretary and other managerial, secretarial, and clerical staff who make up the Secretariat. Under the direction of the Honorary Secretary, the Executive Secretary is in charge of running the Academy on a day-to-day basis. They are also in charge of the strategic plan and other policy guidelines.
Scope of Work
- Under the general direction of the Council and the direct supervision of the Honorary Secretary, the Executive Secretary is in charge of running the Academy on a day-to-day basis and putting the Academy’s Strategic Plan and other policy directives into action;
- S/he is in charge of the Secretariat staff;
- S/he keeps the Academy’s records, archives, and library;
- S/he is in charge of keeping the Academy’s common seal safe
Needed Qualifications and Experience
- The position of Executive Secretary is the same as that of a Deputy Registrar at a public university in Ghana;
- Applicants must have a good first degree and a Master’s degree in either the arts or sciences; and
- Applicants must have at least 15 years of experience after getting their degree, with at least 8 of those years spent in a senior management position.
Qualities
- Proven skills as a leader and manager;
- A team player with good interpersonal skills;
- The ability to use good judgment and show a lot of initiative;
- The ability to communicate well and write good reports;
- The ability to use a computer; and
- The ability to serve at least one five-year term of office before the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.
Tenure
- based on how well they do their job or until they hit the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.
- Pay: The pay is the same as an assistant publication officer at a public university in Ghana.

- A cover letter;
- A curriculum vitae that has been brought up to date;
- Copies of any relevant academic or professional credentials; and
- A statement of approximately 2,500 words stating how the applicants propose to support the strategic plan of the Academy, which must be submitted for consideration for the positions of Executive Secretary and Procurement Officer.
