Job Title: Project Officer

About the company

Education International is a Global Union Federation that works for teachers and other people who work in education. It is the biggest and most representative global sectoral organization of unions, with more than 32.5 million trade union members in 384 organizations in 178 countries and territories. Education International Africa Region (EI Africa) has 121 Affiliates in 53 countries in Africa, including the Middle Eastern countries of Lebanon, Palestine, and Yemen.

Job Summary

We want to hire a project officer to help with the PEER (Promoting Education and Educators’ Rights) Project in Africa, especially in Eswatini and Mozambique in Southern Africa, so that national affiliates can better protect their members’ rights and promote good public education.

Working closely with an internal team in charge of the PEER project, the project officer will help plan and carry out project activities, such as making project plans, reports, and workshops, writing policy position papers, advocating, benchmarking, and keeping networks up to date. S/he will set up the logistics and provide help on the ground for project activities. S/he will also keep a monitoring framework to keep track of the outputs and results of project activities.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Help plan project actions with the help of member organizations in their own countries.
  • Watch how activities are done to make sure they fit with the plans for the calendar and the deadlines for reports.
  • Help plan events, talks, lobbying, and advocacy efforts to make sure the PEER project goes off without a hitch.
  • Collect story and financial reports about PEER project activities and make sure they are in line with the Project Agreement and the needs of Cooperating Partners.
  • Do any other tasks that the Regional Director may ask of you or give you.

Required Skills or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or better in education, international development, or a field related to either of those.
  • At least two years of experience putting together projects. Proven experience in a trade union, civil society, students’ union, non-governmental organization (NGO), or similar setting will be a big plus.
  • Must have both writing and spoken communication skills. If you have excellent English writing skills, that will be a big plus.
  • If you can speak English and Portuguese well, that will be an extra bonus.

Assets

The following things would be great additions:

  • Experience working in the school field
  • Experience working in a multiethnic setting is a plus.
  • Being able to learn Portuguese and French is a plus.

Hours of work

Monday through Friday, normal office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is normal to travel abroad and work outside of normal hours during the week and on the weekends.
