Disability Inclusion Advisor at Ghana Federation of the Disability Organisations (GFD)

GFD is looking for experienced, self-motivated people to lead this new and ambitious project. This is why the following job is open: Disability Inclusion Advisor

Role profile

The Disability Inclusion Advisor will work with the Programmes Manager of GFD to support and help set up practices that are accessible to people with disabilities in civil society, the public sector, and the private sector. She will play a key role in building relationships with these actors and will give hands-on technical support in the form of training and coaching. The Disability Inclusion Advisor’s job is to train and guide different groups on how to include people with disabilities.

To do this, (s)he will mostly use a pool of Disability Inclusion Facilitators. The Advisor will plan with the Facilitators and help them figure out how to make their solutions fit the needs of each organization. The Disability Inclusion Advisor is a strong advocate for including people with disabilities, a natural networker, an inspiring speaker, a role model, and a changemaker.

Key Responsibilities

Networking

GFD in networks of NGOs and/or government groups, as needed; to start and build relationships with both mainstream and disability organizations to promote disability inclusion and to start partnerships with organizations interested in disability mainstreaming.

Giving advice and teaching

To organize learning meetings and working groups; to bring organizations together on learning platforms; to create and give training and workshops on how to include people with disabilities in development programs, workplaces, and policies; To teach and give advice on the same thing.

Pool of Disability Inclusion Facilitators should be merged and made bigger.

Working closely with the GFD Programme team and the rest of the We Can Work team, train and help a growing number of Disability Inclusion Facilitators. To help them plan, carry out, and report on their training and other work-related tasks; Make sure that all of the activities of the pool of Disability Inclusion Facilitators are consistent and of high quality by keeping an eye on them, helping them learn more, and giving them repeat trainings.

Taking care of information and knowledge

To collect and share information about mainstreaming for people with disabilities; To write down what was learned, what happened, and how things changed.

Skills or Experience Needed

  • Higher education or a university degree in an area related to development work or program management
  • At least 3–5 years of experience working with people with disabilities, ideally in NGOs or organizations for people with disabilities.
  • Methods for adult learning and teaching that encourage participation
  • High level of exposure to barriers that people with disabilities face and practical ways to get around them, either through life experience or past work experience.
  • Trainer and facilitator with experience creating and running workshops to build skills and other ways to build capacity with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent people skills and the ability to teach information and experience in a way that is clear and easy to understand.
  • Excellent speaking skills both in writing and in person.
  • Commitment to building up local skills and experience in the past of getting local stakeholders involved and working with them on project planning and implementation.
  • We want someone who has shown they know how to apply Livelihoods and Disability Inclusion.
  • Show effort and be able to work well both with a group and on your own.
  • Ability to get things done on time and in a high-quality way
