ROLE: Security & Conflict Analyst
POSITION SUMMARY
The Security & Conflict Analyst collects, analyzes, and reports on complex information about the social, political, and security contexts of three West African coastal countries: Benin, Ghana, and Togo. Moreover, The Security Analyst will create periodic reports (weekly or biweekly) using open-source data and primary data obtained from community, regional, and national partners. The Security & Conflict Analyst must have excellent written and spoken communication skills in English and French, be highly driven, and be able to quickly produce relevant analyses.
REPORTING AND SUPERVISION.
The Security & Conflict Analyst reports to the Senior Program and Research Officer and works closely with the whole Senior Management Team. Also, The Security & Conflict Analyst can expect frequent direct interactions and requests for information from USAID and other US Government personnel. The role is situated in Accra, with travel expected throughout Benin, Ghana, and Togo, including their northern borders.
Primary Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Collect and analyze open-source data from media, security sources, and program activities (activity notes, final evaluation reports, and grant background sections).
- Communicate with the program’s network of field monitors and partners at the community, regional, and national levels on a daily basis to collect primary data on security incidents, local context, and comments from key stakeholders.
- Maintain a database on security incidents and other noteworthy developments concerning local conflicts, border security, the prevention of violent extremism, and other sociopolitical topics of importance.
- Create monthly (weekly or biweekly) and ad hoc reports outlining the social, political, and security status in the program’s intervention region.
- Provide assistance to activity management teams in guiding activity design and implementation procedures.
- Collaborate with Analysis, Learning, and Reporting team members to create quarterly, semi-annual, and ad hoc reports pertaining to analytical and research items.
- Monitor the program’s geographic footprint to ensure that it remains relevant.
- Participate in weekly implementation meetings to identify priority tasks and offer assistance as needed.
- Represent the program at meetings with USAID, host country governments, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Develop and monitor the implementation of innovative data gathering techniques and technologies in coordination with the Deputy Chief of Party-Program, including research and learning activities developed with external service providers.
- in response to requests from USAID/OTI and the senior management team, conduct desk reviews or oversee field research on sizable, difficult, and varied problem sets.
- Contribute to strategic discussions and evaluations at the cluster and program levels.
- Any other work as requested by the supervisor and senior management team.
Required Skill or Experience
- An advanced university degree in the social sciences, economics, journalism, security studies, or a similar discipline is required.
- Five years of general work experience and three years of specific job experience are required.
- Excellent written and oral communication abilities in English and French.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is necessary.
- Qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis abilities and experience are necessary.
- Attention to detail and the capacity to follow up on projects until completion are necessary.
- Ability to work alone and take the initiative to develop useful results and share them quickly.
- Ability to efficiently prepare and transmit reports during important periods or deadlines.
- Prior experience working on USAID or US Government-funded projects is desirable.
- Prior experience with West African security forces is desirable.
- Experience working in a conflict-prone setting is advantageous.
- Must be a citizen of an ECOWAS member country.
