Canada Immigration Plans to Control Number of New Foreign Workers in 2024

The Canadian government has made a calculated decision by announcing measures to control the number of new foreign workers entering the country after 2024. This development has important ramifications for anyone hoping to work in Canada, and in this post, we’ll go into more detail about the specifics of these suggested adjustments.

Immigration Minister Mark Miller says that the amount of temporary foreign workers coming to Canada may be restricted in the new year or beyond. He also says that the system has been operating a little too freely for far too long. Mr. Miller asserts that there is a connection between the surge of foreign workers and students and the housing issue facing our country.

Mr. Miller told reporters on Thursday that the number of persons who have temporarily entered Canada has increased dramatically over the last several years. His remarks came in response to Statistics Canada’s report this week that the country’s population grew by more than 430,000 during the third quarter of 2023—the highest growth rate in any quarter since 1957.

A recent Statan study states that there are currently over 40.5 million people living in Canada, of which approximately 313,000 are immigrants. Most temporary immigrants entered Canada to work or learn, accounting for the majority of the nation’s third-quarter growth.

Current Housing Concerns

According to Mr. Miller, there is a clear and growing correlation between housing concerns and the rise in temporary residents. He stated that he plans to introduce reforms to deal with the influx at the start of 2024. “I’m trying to focus on the consequences of a system that has been operating somewhat erratically for far too long and is having a noticeable effect,” he said, without intending to target any particular individuals.

His admission that the number of short-term foreign immigrants is influenced by the availability of housing represents a shift in the federal government’s priorities. It’s obvious it puts pressure on the system, particularly given our housing demands, he said. Many other types of temporary foreign residents enter Canada, including international students with post-graduate work visas and temporary agricultural workers.

Newly Announced Changes

Earlier this month, Mr. Miller announced reforms to the foreign student program to lower the amount of applications. One of the modifications is that candidates must now show they have twice as much money to cover living expenses. He said he would consider canceling study permits if states like Ontario do not take action against universities that are graduating foreign students.

Additionally, he declared that he would push for provinces to cease licensing SAR colleges that give overseas students a poor experience. Mark stated on Thursday that “if provinces can’t get their house in shape, we’re prepared to do it if shutting off the faucet from the federal government is a pretty brutal instrument.”

If provinces are unable to address the issue, he said, he will take additional action in the next year to lower the number of overseas students. He made hints about changing the Post-Graduate Work Permit system for international students and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

“Even after you net out the period during COVID,” he said, both indicate higher volume that has climbed dramatically over the past several years. We must exert control over it because it has resulted in some unanticipated effects. I’m prepared to do it, and the government is prepared to move forward, but some serious discussions must first take place to ensure that the affected jurisdictions are doing their fair part of the work.

Canada is managing the intake of new foreign workers in 2024 by taking cautious measures. These changes could have an impact on the job market in the upcoming year, regardless of whether you’re a potential immigrant, an existing resident, or someone who closely monitors Canadian immigration policies.

Canada Immigration Plans for International Students

Canada has announced additional steps to improve the integrity of international students. The integrity of the program for international students would be strengthened, as indicated by Canada’s immigration minister, Mark Miller.

The minister made it clear that while he opposes capping the number of new foreign students admitted, the federal government is launching a new program to check the letters of acceptance (LOA) that prospective international students require to apply for a study permit.

Furthermore, by the fall semester of 2024, the government plans to implement a new recognized institutions system for Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). Colleges, universities, and other educational establishments that have been permitted by provincial and territory governments to accept international students are known as DLIs.

Higher standards for services, assistance, and results for international students will be established by the framework. The idea’s justification is that DLI who satisfy specific IRCC Integrity requirements would be qualified for specific advantages, like ACC’s priority processing of study permit applications. More information regarding how institutions can get recognized and what the advantages also disclosed.
