African Union Calls For Job Applications

POSITION: Senior Internal Auditor 

Job Purpose

Conduct audits of the AfCFTA Secretariat’s financial and information systems, evaluating compliance with applicable standards and guidelines as well as the sufficiency of internal controls.

Primary Functions

  • Audits administrative, human resources, and financial records, statements, and reports at the AfCFTA Secretariat to ensure correctness and consistency.
  • Audits the computer systems of the AfCFTA Secretariat, determining compliance with data security and storage regulations.
  • Examines the effectiveness of internal controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Drafts and presents findings and analysis reports; finds and suggests accounting practice and process adjustments and improvements.

Particular Responsibilities

  • Internal audits and risk management, as well as AFCFTA Secretariat internal audits
  • Understand and document corporate processes, analyze financial rules and procedures, governance practices, and regulatory requirements, and assess compliance with African Union laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist in asset safeguarding by analyzing the internal controls of those assets and verifying their existence.
  • Determine potential operational, financial, or compliance issues that require auditing.
  • Contribute to the establishment of the AfCFTA Secretariat’s overall internal review and audit program by identifying files and activities to be reviewed and organizing work assignments for departmental audits.
  • Prepares audit reports and provides advice on audit findings; engages in departmental and staff training on internal controls and policy; and monitors management’s audit activities.
  • Performs due diligence, contributes to the overall success of the AFCFTA Secretariat by participating in audits and special projects as a team member, and performs any other tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Analyze problems or issues and make recommendations for alternate solutions.
  • In terms of organization and performance evaluation, manages and oversees staff under his/her supervision.
  • Manage and participate in the formulation and implementation of given programs’ goals, objectives, policies, and priorities; suggest and administer policies and procedures
  • Participates in the creation of strategies, policies, programs, and plans.
  • Respond to internal and external audit observations and successfully implement audit recommendations; perform any other duties as given by the Head of Division.

Academic Qualifications and Relevant Experience

  • Master’s degree in auditing, accounting, financial management, business administration, or a similar discipline, plus 7 years of professional experience, including 3 years at a supervisory level in auditing, accounting, or finance, plus at least 5 years in auditing
  • Bachelor’s degree in auditing, accounting, financial management, business administration, or a comparable area, with 10 years of professional experience, including 3 years at a supervisory level in auditing practice, with at least 5 years in auditing.
  • Relevant professional credentials, such as “Certified Public Accountant” or “Chartered/Certified Public Accountant” (e.g., ACCA, CPA, CIMA, CA, etc.)
  • Membership in a relevant professional association will be beneficial.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to build and sustain effective internal and external partnerships and working relationships in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic setting with awareness and respect for diversity, including gender balance
  • Ability to contribute to the development of clear program goals, plans, and actions that are compatible with agreed-upon strategies, as well as to appropriately delegate, monitor, and alter these plans and actions
  • Capability to write clear, professional reports
  • Extensive knowledge of general financial accounting and reporting, as well as the security of information systems.
  • Outstanding organizing abilities and attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in one of the AU officials’ working languages (Arabic, English, French, Kiswahili, Portuguese, and Spanish) is required, as is fluency in another AU language(s)
