ROLE: Bilingual Research Assistant (International Desk)
Company Profile
The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) is a non-governmental, non-partisan civil society think tank that has been working since 1998 to promote democracy, good governance, and inclusive development in Ghana and across Africa through research and analysis, policy and civic engagement, and strategic interventions and partnerships. In pursuit of its goal and vision, the Center uses the power of evidence-based analysis and ideas to spark public discourse, as well as inform and impact public policy.
Job Description
Purpose
CDD-Ghana is looking for a bilingual research assistant to help its International Desk undertake thorough research and policy analysis on international actors’ activities and impacts on democratic consolidation and inclusive development in West and Central Africa. The Research Assistant will help generate evidence-based research and policy analysis across multiple subject areas to enhance advocacy engagement with regional and international stakeholders.
Background
The continent’s democratic growth has stagnated recently. Since 2020, nine coups have occurred across the continent, threatening representative governance and accountability. The COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian-Ukraine war, and Israel’s war with Hamas have slowed economic growth and given African governments more time to postpone elections and stay in power while fighting violent extremism.
Despite these constraints, many African governments have encouraged bilateral and multilateral economic and political alliances to increase international solidarity and support. In these foreign summits and state visits, infrastructure spending, trade facilitation, military and security aid, and economic recovery assistance have been discussed.
A multipolar world has transformed Africa’s geopolitics as multilateralism declines and nationalism rises. Since global affairs move quickly and affect democratization, African think tanks must study and understand global dynamics to inform regional and local policy decisions to resist democracy decline.
In order to promote democratic governance and development, the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has established an International Desk to study global and regional powers’ interests, dynamics, and effects on democratic consolidation and inclusive development.
Scope of work
The Bilingual Research Assistant, reporting to the Desk Director and other supervisors, will help conduct research and policy analysis on global and regional powers’ influence in West and Central Africa, with a focus on their impact on democratic consolidation and inclusive development. This will entail investigating trends, dynamics, and implications in thematic areas such as democratic governance, human rights and the rule of law, media and civic space, peace and security, political transitions, migration, climate change, international trade and investment, technology, and digital governance, among others.
Responsibilities
The Research Assistant’s responsibilities will include:
- Assist in conducting literature evaluations on global and regional powers’ activities and actions, including their interests, dynamics, and effects on democratic consolidation and inclusive development in West and Central Africa.
- Monitor, collect, and analyze data from a variety of sources, including research-based institutions, case studies, and comparative studies, to better understand the political economy of international engagements and their implications for democratic processes in West and Central Africa.
- Contribute to the quarterly assessment of the overall state of transitional governance in West and Central Africa, as well as the review of transitional frameworks and processes used by juntas following regional and sub-regional protocols on democracy and good governance, as well as other international standards and best practices, to inform policy implementation.
- Assist in the drafting of research reports, policy briefs, and analytical documents, as well as the publication and distribution of research findings.
- Complete any other responsibilities provided by the supervisors.
Required Skill or Experience
- At least a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Political Science, Development Studies, or a similar discipline.
- At least three years of relevant experience in doing research on international affairs, democratic governance, or similar subjects (emphasis on West or Central Africa is advantageous).
- Demonstrated capacity to understand international interactions and trends, as well as their implications for democratic consolidation and equitable growth.
- Strong research and analytical skills, including knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
- Excellent writing abilities, with the ability to help produce high-quality research reports and policy briefings.
- Ability to operate remotely, independently, and collaboratively in a multicultural setting.
- Proficiency in English and French is essential.
Duration: This will be a full-time position for one year, renewed depending on performance and funding availability.
Remuneration: Attractive, in line with experience and qualifications.
Location: The principal location for this role is CDD-Ghana. However, the Research Assistant may have the option of working remotely.
