UK Study Visa Update 2024: International Students Say Goodbye to UK Universities

The latest modifications to Rishi Sunak’s UK visa policy appear to be affecting international students enrolling in UK universities for the January 2024 intake. Enroll Data Insights’ data indicates that a large portion of enrollment figures have decreased.

In contrast to January 2023, the following modifications were observed:

  • 52% decline in deposit payments
  • 64% fewer studies are receiving confirmations of acceptance.
  • Visa issuance declines by 71%
  • In the South Asian market, deposit payments decreased by 52%, and the number of Cas Visas issued decreased by 66%.

Experts Review

Industry insiders have expressed concern about these trends. An analyst claims that general anti-immigration rhetoric, prohibitions, and delays in acquiring visas are to blame for the fall. He feels that the UK’s reputation as a leading location for higher education is harmed by these reasons. He reports that enrolment for classes in January has decreased by 40–60%, and he projects that September 2024 course enrollment would decrease by a further 20%.

Various viewpoints seem to indicate that this trend might not be all that significant. Another expert claims that the declining numbers reflect a normal regression after multiple prosperous years. He acknowledges, though, that given the uncertainties surrounding the new visa regulations, international students may decide to travel to different places.

A career counselor went on to say that enrollment is typically lower in January because many programs start in September, but that the new UK government policies have made international students feel unwelcome because of challenges, such as not being able to meet the minimum wage requirements in the UK for a skilled work visa.

Pupils are considering international trips. A growing number of students are leaving the UK to study abroad as a result of things like

  • The reopening of Australia
  • 5-year post-study work visa in France
  • Improved relations with Canada

The recent policy changes implemented by the UK Home Office have had an impact on over 300,000 individuals. This includes prohibiting foreign care workers’ families from entering the nation and tripling the minimum wage for skilled migrants.

All Changes to UK Student Visa Requirements from January 2024

Conditions for student visas will change in January 2024. This update addresses the latest modifications to the rules for UK student visas, which take effect in 2024. The UK government announced major changes to the immigration laws in July 2023, emphasizing how they will affect international students.

Remember that there are limitations on dependents. Unless they are enrolled in a post-graduate research program, international students in the UK on a student visa will not be permitted to bring their dependents with them starting in January 2024. Additionally, you should be aware of the limitations on Visa transitions.

Remember that starting July 17, 2023, international students will be able to convert their student visa to a work visa after completing their courses.

Applicability of the New Rules

Students who enroll in classes beginning in January 2024 will be bound by the dependent restriction. The restriction on changing visas was put into effect on Thursday, July 17, 2023.

Are there any exceptions for current students’ dependents?

If students enroll in classes beginning in September 2023, they will be permitted. Students who wish to apply in advance for a dependant visa must do so before January 2024, when the new rules go into effect. Currently, dependents of visa holders for skilled workers can apply for visas from their native nations.

Work Rights for Students

The good news is that the regulations permitting international students to work 20 hours per week during the academic year and an unlimited amount of hours during the official vacation period will not be altered.
