Subscription Platform Architect at McClatchy
McClatchy IT creates, deploys, and maintains the software that runs over seventy news sites, such as miamiherald.com, charlotteobserver.com, and newsobserver.com (Raleigh, NC). Enterprise-class data centers host and keep an eye on all of the sites.
Also, McClatchy IT helps all of the Web sites with hands-on technical training, consulting services, and customer service that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Our first choice would be to work from home in the Central or Eastern time zones.
At McClatchy, a Software Architect designs solutions, makes proofs of concept, works with developers as a mentor, reviews code, and looks into new technologies that could fit into our enterprise architecture.
Software architects work closely with their coworkers, one or more multidisciplinary Agile teams, the department head, product owners, and others to define deliverables, divide and conquer tasks, design solutions, and write code.
The best person for the job knows at least one of Go, Rust, Ruby on Rails, C++, object-oriented PHP, MySQL, and Node.js. The best candidate has at least four to six years of experience in Service or Web development and at least two years of experience in a specific area.
Base pay for this job is expected to be between $135,000 and $165,000 per year. Individual base pay can change within that range based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, location, and local wage and hours laws.
Main responsibilities and tasks:
- Service-oriented architecture with structured design and development
- Creating web interfaces in HTML (using templates) and JavaScript
- Making unit test modules and designing them
- Peer code reviews
- Making documentation for use by both developers and end users
- Giving training to other developers and people who work in customer service
- Availability after hours for emergencies.
Qualifications
Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, electrical or computer engineering, physics, or mathematics is preferred, but not required.
Required Experience:
- Four to six years of programming experience in a professional setting are needed.
- At least two years of experience in any of the above fields.
- Experience leading a multi-disciplinary agile team
- Experience with a revision control system for large-scale software development (e. g. GIT, Subversion)
Special skills, licenses, or certifications are needed:
- Modern software design patterns; development in a team setting; experience
- Architecting cloud-based solutions for scalability and performance
- HTML and JavaScript skills.
- Solid knowledge of Unix or Linux, the command line, scripting, configuring, and running the system.
- Customer service skills
Special skills, licenses, or certifications wanted:
- Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban)
- Structure and use of the REST API
- Test-driven development, unit tests, and test automation Web Services in a Service-
- Oriented Architecture
- Data caching (Varnish, memcached, etc.).
