About Stephen F. Austin State University Scholarships

Based on a comprehensive evaluation of academic records, first-year domestic and international students are annually granted the SFA Academic Excellence Scholarship. An Academic Excellence Scholarship will be awarded to any student who meets the requirements after their academic records are reviewed and who is accepted into the university by June 30 in preparation for the next fall semester.

Concerning Stephen F. Austin State University

The institution we call SFA is woven with history. Despite naming the new college after Stephen F. Austin, the State Legislature insisted on naming it after the historical figure, even though the Act only designated a location “east of the 96th meridian.” The Father of Texas was to be honored by the state.

Nacogdoches was chosen in 1917 by the State Board of Regents due to its rich historical heritage. The citizens chose Sam Houston’s former land and Thomas J. Rusk’s homestead as the location of the new college.

In a historical irony, the newly established college was forced to open on the Washington Square campus of Old University, even though the new campus was not yet finished. The one-room schoolhouse known as “The Shack” served as a symbolic meeting place for Birdwell and his small group of faculty members, who were the pioneers of higher education in East Texas.

The college’s first president

The college’s first president was a historian who never renounced his career in history. Lois Foster [Blount], a woman, was the first faculty member appointed; she was a historian. The college spearheaded the restoration movements in the state by rebuilding the Old Stone Fort on campus in 1936 as part of the Texas Centennial celebrations. The yearbook committee met in the Memorial Building (the Old Stone Fort) on Washington Square in 1923–1924 and called the annual edition the Stone Fort. In addition, SFA’s third and fourth presidents were active historians. One of the first departments at the new college was the history department.

Anniversary years have traditionally been a time for SFA to honor its history. Many of the articles published on these occasions will be available on the SFA Story website.

Apart from the avenues provided by your academic department, SFA accommodates over 200 student clubs and organizations! There will be lots of chances for you to network with other lumberjacks who have similar interests.

Stephen F. Austin State University Scholarship Benefits

The amount of the SFA Academic Excellence Scholarship varies from $1,500 to $6,000. Any student who graduates from high school with the title of valedictorian is immediately eligible to receive the $6,000 Academic Excellence Scholarship award.

At the conclusion of each spring term, completion of all program requirements is a prerequisite for eligibility for renewal each year. The fall and spring periods receive an equal share of the scholarship grant.

It is not necessary for students to submit a formal application in order to be eligible for the Academic Excellence Scholarship because they are automatically evaluated and considered for the scholarship immediately after being officially enrolled in the university.
