Concerning  Robert Morris University

Robert Morris University was first established as the Pittsburgh School of Accountancy in 1921, marking the beginning of its history. The Pennsylvanian and Founding Father Robert Morris dubbed the “Financier of the American Revolution,” was honored with the school’s new name in 1935.

Robert Morris University is a private institution in a Pittsburgh suburb that trains students for amazing lives and careers.

RMU expands on over a century of educational achievement with more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, a range of professional certificates, and tailored programs for corporate and organizational partners.

Robert Morris: Who was he?

Although Robert Morris isn’t as well-known as his friend George Washington, the American colonies’ valiant fight to overthrow British control would never have been successful without him.

Robert Morris was born in Liverpool in 1734, and while his father was working as a tobacco trader in the colonies, his grandmother raised him. Morris sailed over at the age of 14, starting as an apprentice at a Philadelphia mercantile company. He soon became a partner, and both his fortune and reputation increased rapidly.

The Continental Congress requested that Morris use his financial savvy and maritime ties to help raise the funds and supplies needed to establish an American army and navy when the Revolutionary War broke out in 1775. Throughout the conflict, he harassed the states as an administrator of finances, demanding money to keep soldiers nourished and armed. Several of the ships in his commerce fleet turned into “privateers,” assaulting British ships and taking their cargo, and he frequently exploited his credit to obtain financing for the colonial army.

Morris was cleared and given acclaim by a Senate investigation, despite his opponents’ accusations of war profiteering. Later, he was elected as one of Pennsylvania’s first senators and went on to play a significant part in the 1787 Constitutional Convention. Only two men—himself and the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution—have signed each of the three basic documents of the nation.

The provisional national capital was Philadelphia when George Washington took office.

Morris extended an invitation to the First Family to reside in his residence during both of Washington’s tenures. Morris moved in next door with his wife, Mary. In his later years, Morris invested millions of acres of frontier property with his riches, betting on a real estate boom as the nation expanded and prospered. Morris eventually had a boom, but it was too late; he went bankrupt, served three years in debtor’s prison, and then lived a modest existence until he died in 1806.

However, his service to his nation was well remembered. Morris is one of only three Founding Fathers portrayed in “The Apotheosis of Washington,” the 1865 fresco that still adorns the Capitol dome interior, along with Washington and Benjamin Franklin.
