Study In Norway: Norwegian Business School Scholarships for 2024

Do you possess the qualities of being interested, ambitious, and analytical? If you earn a Ph.D. from BI, you will have a solid foundation upon which to build a successful academic or research career. Our PhD candidates hone their skills as researchers under the guidance of members of the BI faculty who are known internationally.

About Norwegian Business School

The BI Norwegian Business School is Norway’s preeminent source of information derived from empirical research in the areas of business and management. It is an autonomous foundation that does not seek to generate a profit from its activities.

Finn Ien was the person who initiated the creation of the BI Norwegian Business School in the year 1943. BI is the first business school in Norway to receive triple accreditation, and as a result, it is regarded as a “Triple Crown School,” a distinction it shares with only one percent of the business schools in the entire globe.

The three most coveted international accreditations have been bestowed upon BI Norwegian Business School, making it the first business school in Norway to achieve this honor.

The Financial Times’ annual rankings of business schools in Norway have placed BI at the top spot for the past six years running. The institution also earns respectable ratings in other internationally famous rankings, such as the Eduniversal Top Business Schools Worldwide and the Economist rankings, amongst others.

Ph.D. program at BI SIX SPECIALTY AREAS

Accounting

Candidates for this PhD specialty receive in-depth instruction at the forefront of accounting research.

Goals of specialization

Candidates with an accounting specialization are better prepared for roles in research organizations, auditing and consulting firms, and national and international organizations such as financial regulators (such as the SEC, Finanstilsynet, etc.), accounting standard-setting bodies, and other pertinent policy institutions. Applicants interested in accounting, finance, or economics and possessing good quantitative and analytical abilities are encouraged to apply.

Identifying characteristics

Students with specializations in finance and economics are admitted to the accounting program. Therefore, the candidates are a member of a broader group of recently admitted PhD students to BI and take some of the same courses.

Classes are taught by regional instructors, foreign scholars who are invited, or through collaboration across Europe. As a result, candidates can start establishing their own academic network early on.

As soon as the program begins, research becomes important since applicants are expected to prepare summer papers under faculty supervision. Students can now share their research findings at international conferences more swiftly, thanks to this.

Fully financed bursaries

Financial support is provided to all Ph.D. applicants upon admission to the program. The candidates sign a four-year first contract to work full-time.

Support will only be provided if participants maintain good standing and make consistent progress toward meeting the program’s criteria over the next four years.

PhD candidates are covered by the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and are eligible for full parental leave and health insurance. The BI Norwegian Business School’s main campus in Oslo serves as the workplace.

Finance

People who want to get their Ph.D. in this area will get an in-depth and intensive training program that is at the cutting edge of both theoretical and empirical study in finance.

PhD with a focus on finance

The Ph.D. specialization in finance prepares students for jobs in top academic institutions, research-focused national and foreign organizations, and the business world.

Top universities like London Business School, Tilburg University, the University of Melbourne, NOVA University Lisbon, the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH), the Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE), and National Chengchi University (NCCU) have hired people from the department.

Some companies that have local jobs in Norway are Storebrand, Boston Consulting Group, and the Financial Supervisory Authority. We want people who are good with numbers and analysis and have a lot of experience in fields like finance, economics, statistics, and mathematics to apply.

The PhD program, which lasts four years, is meant to give you the skills to do in-depth research. It also includes a course component, seminars, PhD panels, a pre-doctoral defense, and finally, the dissertation and final defense. There is time set aside for teaching 25% of the time.

Things that make the specialization unique

The four-year school is very tough and only accepts people who are good at analysis and are intellectually curious. It is set up in a way that is the same for all similar programs around the world.

The first year is spent taking classes that cover all the important areas of finance and economics that are important for a finance PhD. These classes are mostly taught by BI faculty. The candidates can also use the Nordic Finance Network to take specialized courses and take part in doctoral workshops.

Candidates move on to study work in the second year of the program, which they do until the end of the program. Those who are applying will work on their doctoral dissertation, which is usually a collection of three study papers. This kind of research is done with the help of the supervisor and other faculty members at the school.

People from other study institutions often work with faculty members on joint projects. Research goes well in this area, and PhD students are very involved in the department’s social life.

They can take full maternity leave, get health insurance, and be a part of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The place of work is the main building of BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo.

Marketing

The department is looking for people who have a strong background in fields that are important to marketing, like economics, psychology, and statistics.
