To be deemed eligible for the ADB–Japan Scholarship Program, applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Candidates must be from a nation that is a member of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and meet the eligibility criteria for the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) scholarship.
  • Dual Citizenship: It is not permissible to hold dual citizenship in any civilized country.
  • Admission: Prospective applicants must obtain admission to an accredited master’s program at a Designated Institution.
  • Educational Qualification: Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, demonstrating exceptional academic achievement.
  • Professional Experience: A minimum of two years of full-time professional work experience after receiving a university degree is necessary when applying. Fluency in both spoken and written English is crucial for achieving academic achievement.
  • Age Restriction: Applicants must be below 35 years old upon submitting their application unless there are exceptional circumstances approved by the Government of Japan.
  • Eligibility Requirements: Prospective applicants must possess a sound physical condition and demonstrate a firm dedication to their home country by committing to a mandatory two-year period of service after completing the program, during which they will actively contribute to the advancement of their nation.
  • Applicants are prohibited from having any familial or employment connections with Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management, staff, or consultants of ADB. This includes relationships by blood or adoption, such as spouse, parent, brother, child, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew. Additionally, individuals who are employed by ADB-JSP Designated Institutions or are currently residing or working in a country other than their native nation are ineligible. Furthermore, they mustn’t be currently registered in any postgraduate programs.

The application procedure for the Government of Japan ADB Scholarship is as follows:

  • Inquire about information and obtain application forms from the selected partner university.
  • Ensure that all necessary application paperwork is fully completed, including the ADB-JSP information sheet.
  • Submit the finalized paperwork to the institution.
  • The institution assesses and determines the admission of applicants.
