Study In Netherlands: Leiden University Excellence Scholarship 2024–25

Applications are open for interested students to submit their applications for the 2024 Leiden University Excellence Scholarship.

About the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship

The first university to be founded in the Netherlands was Leiden University. It is stated that in honor of the city’s valiant defense against the Spanish invaders’ siege, William of Orange bestowed Academia Lugduno Batava upon Leiden in 1575.

Bastion of freedom is our motto, praesidium libertatis. Professor Rudolph Cleveringa’s 1940 speech, in which he objected to the threatened termination of his Jewish colleagues, is a well-known illustration of this dedication to freedom. Every year, Cleveringa lectures and seminars are organized all around the world to honor this brave deed, which is celebrated by Leiden University. Even now, our shared bond is freedom.

The volumes Groepsportret Met Dame (Group Portrait with a Lady), written by University History Professor Willem Otterspeer, provide a wealth of information on the university’s rich past. Otterspeer discusses the founding of the university, how it came to be recognized in Leiden, and how it evolved into a vital component of society throughout each century of the institution’s existence. The university’s history is recounted in his book, The Bastion of Liberty.

*All EU nations plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland comprise the EEA/EFTA.

An extra note for students in the UK

Students from the UK may now apply for the LExS since the UK is no longer an EEA member. Note: applicants who were already residents of the Netherlands and enrolled in their Dutch municipality’s BRP before January 1, 2021, are not eligible for this. The Brexit dossier has additional information on Brexit.

Academic prerequisites

To be considered for admission to the Master’s program, students must have received excellent academic results from their previous study program(s). The fact that the student graduated in the top 10% of his or her previous study program serves as an indicator. It is important to emphasize that this data is simply meant to illustrate the intensity of competition; ranking proof is not required.

Responsibility

Before the scholarship is awarded, students who are awarded an LExS are required to adhere to the terms and conditions related to the scholarship and attest to them in writing.

Restrictions

Except for students enrolling in master’s programs that require a specific prior master’s degree or work experience (such as LLM Advanced Studies programs), scholarships cannot be given to applicants who have already earned a master’s degree from Leiden University.

Scholarships are not given to students who will do the following:

  • a Leiden Law School MSc or non-advanced LLM program, or
  • a course of study at Leiden Law School, the Faculty of Humanities, or the Faculty of Sciences that begins in February.

Students who don’t match the aforementioned nationality standards aren’t eligible to receive scholarships.

Combining the LExS with another full scholarship from an outside source is not feasible. If a student finds out about a full scholarship from another source, they need to get in touch with the scholarship office.  The LExS may occasionally be paired with a partial scholarship from an outside source. Get in touch with the scholarship team for more information.

It is not a complete scholarship, the LExS. The “proof of sufficient funds” requirement still applies to non-EEA LExS holders applying for a student visa or residency permit.

How To Apply?

Apply online for admission to Leiden University’s Master’s program, and if necessary, pay the application fee.

Remember that creating and submitting an admissions application can take up to two days, so begin the process well in advance of the LExS deadline.

Once your admissions application has been submitted, go back to the Apply screen and select Scholarships in your online application. The LExS application will now be available in the area of the scholarship if you qualify.

Please take note that if the LExS is not visible in your scholarships section, you are either not qualified for the LExS or have not yet filed your admissions application.

After indicating your desire to apply for the LExS, upload your motivation letter for the program. This needs to be a 500-word or less PDF file in which you should explain why you want the award.

Apply for a scholarship before the LExS deadline. Please be advised that you will not be able to edit your scholarship application online or by emailing new materials after it has been submitted.

You must submit a separate online application for admission along with a motivation letter if you are enrolling in more than one study program or specialization and would like to apply for a LExS for each.

Late applications

Late scholarship applications won’t be taken into account. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that, before the LExS deadline, they construct and submit both their scholarship application and their admissions application.

Method of selection

Within six weeks following the LExS deadline, the faculty selection committees will propose their LExS honorees.

An email will be sent to each applicant informing them if they have been granted an LExS:

  • By November’s end (for programs that begin in February),
  • By April 30th (for study programs that begin in September),
