Senior Specialist, Commercial Legal at MTN Ghana
Summary of Job:
Give legal advice to guide the organization in commercial legal activities/transactions that need MTN’s input, such as writing, structuring, etc., with the goal of ensuring corporate governance and compliance and minimizing and mitigating legal risk to the business.
Key Tasks
- Talk about, write, and carry out formal agreements.
- Add company policies that are relevant to contracts and give legal advice on business issues.
- Keep an eye on, manage, and give feedback on the litigation strategy and method of outside lawyers in all ongoing lawsuits and disputes.
- Handle disagreements that come up and be able to decide if they need to be escalated.
- Keep an eye on the legal and regulatory scene, report on laws, rules, and guidelines that could affect the company’s business, and give advice on legal matters.
- Take care of legal risks that come with transactions in line with business policy.
- Give legal advice on transactions and legal opinions on different legal problems.
- Look into the laws that apply and make suggestions about the legal effects of business plans and choices, pointing out the risks that come with them.
- Give advice, negotiate, and run business legal deals inside and outside of MTN.
- Check to make sure that all practices, processes, policies, and business are in line with Ghana’s laws.
- Help regional or company projects with legal issues.
- Help the company’s internal rules get put into place.
- Help the company’s efforts to change government and regulatory policies that affect its business.
- Help partners get answers quickly.

Needed Qualifications and Experience
Education
- A law degree and a legal qualification, such as passing the Bar Exams.
- A post-graduate degree or certification in commercial law, communications law, or international commercial law is preferred but not required.
Experience
- At least five years of experience in commercial or corporate law after graduating from law school, either in a large local law firm or in the legal area of a big company. Experience must include working as a supervisor and taking part directly in: • Negotiating and writing up fairly complicated business deals.
- Telco/Finance Experience a plus.
Professional and technical skills:
- In-depth understanding of commercial laws, telecoms laws, labor laws, land laws, etc.
- Project management skills for some projects;
- Conflict management; contract management; information management; legal advice; litigation management; reporting; research orientation.
- Good verbal and written communication skills;

- Computer literacy;
- Strong negotiating and consulting skills;
- Good interpreting skills.
