Overview

The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) is part of the NGO Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) (IPPF). PPAG, a prominent provider of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) education, information, and services in Ghana, in close partnership with OXFAM, welcomes result-oriented and committed individuals to apply for the following vacant position in the Association.

RESEARCH CONSULTANT REFERENCES (S)

A GLOBAL STUDY OF MEN AND WOMEN’S MALE CONTRACEPTIVE KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES, AND BEHAVIORS IN GHANA USING MIXED METHODS

Background

Women are expected to contracept. Men can help with contraception by supporting their partners’ contraceptive choices, using condoms correctly and consistently, understanding withdrawal’s limits, and getting a vasectomy. Only 15% of contraceptive-using women globally use a male-controlled technique due to condom inadequacy, withdrawal ineffectiveness, and vasectomy inaccessibility. 1 New male contraceptive techniques (MCs) may be needed to reduce global unplanned pregnancy.

Fortunately, reversible hormonal and non-hormonal MCs are being developed to minimize worldwide unmet contraceptive need and increase gender equity. Even if new MCs are approved, men and couples will only use them if culture changes to make contraception a shared responsibility.

Contemporary study on men’s contraceptive and reproductive experiences and behaviors, as well as men’s and women’s knowledge, attitudes, and actions regarding male contraceptives, is needed. This research would further contextualize men and women’s willingness to utilize and rely on new MCs and shed light on societal and structural changes needed to help men delay childbearing.

Combining these data with women’s perceptions, attitudes, and experiences of new MCs and male contraceptive practices can help describe the potential influence of new MCs on unmet contraceptive need, gender equity, and men’s use of preventive health services beyond contraception.

In this context, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), and the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) are partnering on a research project to advance global male contraceptive production with contextual considerations.

The study will also uncover societal and institutional constraints to men’s contraceptive duties and responsibilities that may need to be optimized before new MCs are widely used. Characterizing populations that may be more or less susceptible to MCs can affect how these technologies are introduced and distributed.

The study’s goals are:

• To characterize men’s individual and family pregnancy prevention efforts.
• To evaluate men’s attitudes toward existing MCs and their willingness to try new ones, taking gender norms into account.
• To assess women’s opinions toward their male partner’s engagement in contraceptive and pregnancy decision-making, their partner’s use of existing MCs, and their willingness to utilize novel MCs for pregnancy prevention.

Objectives

• To examine the effects of sociodemographic characteristics, reproductive life plans, family planning, and male norms and gender roles on men’s use of existing MCs and attitudes about new ones.
• To identify couples’ conflicting contraceptive and reproductive views and examine how these affect willingness to use new MCs for pregnancy prevention.
• To identify a new MC-based opportunity to increase men’s preventative and promotive health service use.
• To examine present male reproductive health services’ institutional capacities and service providers’ views on new MCs.
• Thus, PPAG, Ghana’s primary implementor, needs research consultants to help implement this nationwide effort. The research should benefit from this contextual understanding.

Study Outcomes

The research consultant(s) will employ mixed approaches to achieve the study’s goals and objectives:

• Distinguish between contraceptive-eligible and contraceptive-seeking men’s MC attitudes.
• Introduce guys to more hormonal and non-hormonal MC qualities (e.g., mechanisms of action, routes of administration, dosing schedules, time to effectiveness, need for semen analysis and potential side effects).
• Examine sociodemographic (e.g., age and SES), reproductive (e.g., history of pregnancy and unplanned pregnancy, desire for children), contraceptive (e.g., current method use and effectiveness), and psychosocial and gender norms factors (e.g., gender equitable beliefs, prioritization of sexual needs, involvement in contraceptive decision making) linked to men’s use of existing MCs and willingness to trial or use new MCs.
• Include the opinions of female partners of both contraceptive-eligible and contraceptive-seeking men, whose relationships and experiences choosing on and using contraception with their male partners may impact MC attitudes.
• Then, Explore how, where, and how often men access new MCs to promote men’s uptake of preventative health behaviors and services.
• Qualitative, in-depth interviews can contextualize quantitative survey findings or specific subpopulations of interest.
• This statewide survey would include Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi, Techiman, Tamale, and Kparigu.
• Social media, particularly for recruiting, would also be used extensively in the study.

The quantitative element of the study is expected to recruit 300 people nationwide, and the qualitative part 30.

Schedule

January 2023 to December 2024 is the study’s duration. However, the consultant won’t work the whole time. Engagement will be based on the man hours needed to deliver deliverables according to a work plan.

Deliverables/Task of Consultant

The consultant must produce/develop/lead the following:

• Renew ethical clearance for year 2.
• Based on PPAG and partner interactions, inception report updated study design and plan.
• Organize
• Progress updates
• Preliminary findings (both quantitative and qualitative components)
• Conclusions
• Report slides
• Three manuscripts were approved.
• Management/Supervision
• Finally, PPAG’s Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation Unit will supervise the consultant(s). The consultant’s point of contact at PPAG will be the Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation

Skills

Lead consultants must meet these requirements:

• An advanced degree (minimum research-based master’s degree) from a recognized university in Public Health, Health Quality, Health Economy, Population Studies, Development Studies, International Development, Research Methodologies, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation, or a related discipline.
• Then, At least 5 years of progressive experience conducting health program research and evaluation.
• Also, Excellent comprehension of research methods and processes.
• Afterward, Knowledge of the local health system, including sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
• Required is English fluency. Akan fluency is a plus.
• Prerequisites
• In their submission, the consultant or firm should provide:

• Similar assignments from the past 5 years, with references.
• A table with these headings should record the: title of the project/assessment/research; kind of assessment/research (baseline, midterm, endline, etc.); total budget; donor; scope (geographic); topic area; and duration.
• Technical proposal—detailed research design and timeframe. 5 pages max
• Financial proposal — budget should cover all estimated costs, such as lodging, travel, meals, man-hours, etc. National tax provisions should be in the budget.
• Certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Clinical Trial Ethics Training (CITI), or other related research ethics certification GRA Tax Clearance Certificate and Company
• Registration paperwork (if applicable).
