Ph.D. Scholarships 2023–2024: International Centre for Tax and Development

The International Center for Tax and Development (ICTD) is now taking applications for Ph.D. scholarships for 2023–2024. Up to four Ph.D. students from South Asian and African nations will receive funding from the ICTD beginning in September 2023.

An organization called the International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD) conducts research with the goal of enhancing tax administration and policy in low-income nations. The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex in Brighton, United Kingdom, serves as the main office for the ICTD. The ICTD is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Norwegian government, and the British government.

Scholarship

  • Students will get complete scholarships that cover all university costs as well as a stipend that is in line with the UK Research Council funding (currently 17,668 GBP per year) and other incentives like money for conference travel, money to pay for visa fees, and a portion of relocation costs.

Eligibility

  • Ph.D. studies should concentrate on taxation in African and/or south Asian nations in order to qualify for funding. Candidates are free to concentrate on any topic within the broad scope that piques their interest.
  • However, candidates may find it helpful to explore the research portfolio of the ICTD and its individual Fellows on the ICTD website. Projects do not necessarily need to fit inside one of the organization’s current research programs. Since the ICTD is a multidisciplinary organization, appropriate proposals may use any disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspective, including those from anthropology, economics, or political science, among other fields. They anticipate high competition for this scholarship.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of:

  • The research proposal’s academic caliber. Is the topic pertinent to both policy and research, among other things that the reviewers will take into account? Is it adequately connected to what is already known? Are the techniques reliable and appropriate? Can the planned study be carried out?
  • Profile of candidates, including experience and skills. Candidates with appropriate work experience will receive preference. For entry into the Ph.D. program at Sussex/IDS, a strong master’s degree outcome is also required.
  • Fit the research interests of the supervisors and ICTD. availability of supervisors with pertinent research expertise and techniques understanding. They will also think about how the projects add to the body of ICTD research.

While it is not required for initiatives to have a single-country emphasis, they must have Africa or South Asia as their primary focus in order to be taken into consideration.

HOW TO APPLY?

By March 15, 2023, applicants for the ICTD scholarship must submit their applications using the specific form (deadline: 23:59 BST). Before applying for the ICTD scholarship, candidates don’t have to pick a possible supervisor or have already applied for a Ph.D. position at the University of Sussex. Candidates who make the shortlist will be urged to apply between March 31 and May 8, 2023.
