POSITION: Environmental Officer

About This Role:

Coordinate all areas of the Ahafo North site laboratory management to ensure that all relevant environmental policies, processes, and standards, Ghanaian laws and regulations, and Newmont Corporate Environmental Standards are followed at all times.

In this role, you will:

Environmental Lab Analysis

  • Conduct laboratory tests as needed and ensure that procedures are followed in line with protocols and QA/QC procedures.
  • Develop and manage environmental monitoring techniques and reporting, including QA/QC for water quality, air quality, noise monitoring, and blast monitoring, to meet legal and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Maintain and calibrate environmental testing and monitoring equipment.
  • Ensure that water, soil, and tissue samples are dispatched and chains of custody are prepared for analysis by certified laboratories.
  • Ensure the chain of custody is followed while sampling and sending samples to external labs.
  • Responsible for conducting lab inspections, identifying hazards in the lab, and inspecting lab equipment to ensure correct operation.
  • Ensure that all reagents and well-labeled bottles are available for analysis.
  • Make sure the emergency response kit is well-stocked for emergency monitoring.

Environmental Data Collection and Assurance

  • Managing and maintaining the environmental data system through continual collection and validation of environmental data, as well as database updates based on field monitoring programs and laboratory analysis results.
  • Conduct inventory assessments to ensure that all necessary supplies are available for monitoring activities.

Reporting

  • Manage environmental data analysis and trends to assess the efficacy of environmental management programs, as well as prepare and present weekly reports on key program performance metrics.
  • Prepare and submit returns and reports to meet regulatory obligations.
  • Determine trends in environmental monitoring data.
  • All noncompliance issues should be reported immediately.
  • Create and maintain standard operating procedures for a variety of laboratory analyses.

Environmental Compliance

  • Register and monitor compliance.
  • Noncompliance should be reported to management immediately.
  • Create corrective action plans and track their completion, if needed.
  • Participate in emergency response exercises and demonstrate your capacity to coordinate field-based responses.

Team Leadership

Approve the lab analysis and dispatch schedules.
Review the monitoring schedules.
Supervise the Environmental Technician (Laboratory).

Additional Responsibilities:

Safety

  • Report any occurrences and accidents within the workgroup so that management can identify areas for improvement in work procedures.
  • Demonstrate safety leadership by adhering to Newmont’s policies and procedures, which include, but are not limited to, safety inspections, safety training, annual refresher, safety talks, incident reporting, and investigation.
  • Attend safety/environmental meetings and present accurate information.
  • Provide liaison support with the operations team to help create an end-to-end life of mine (LOM) plan that enables concurrent reclamation while meeting the agreed-upon closure requirements.
  • Take part in the review of closure and reclamation designs.
  • Assist in the formulation and updating of the LOM closure and reclamation cost estimates.
  • Support the coordination and collection of all necessary information for the
  • Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) reclamation bonding procedure.
  • Coordinate fieldwork efforts of Business Partners/Consultants involved in closure and reclamation projects and research.
  • Create, implement, and measure Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Ahafo concurrent reclamation.
  • Monitor all land disturbances caused by project development and related construction operations to verify that topsoil is stripped, stockpiled, and managed optimally, as well as that all regulations and procedures are followed.
  • Provide direct field support for the implementation of the bushfire prevention plan, as well as supervision of workers involved in the bushfire prevention program.
  • Collect monitoring data on revegetation dynamics, soil properties, and plant growth optimization, and generate documentation and reports on the success criteria for reclamation.
  • Control noxious weeds across the entire site.
  • Support site-wide biodiversity monitoring and management.
  • Support the Environment team in ensuring general visible felt leadership (VFL) through inspections, critical control verifications (CCVs), and so forth.

Your Training, Skills, and Experience Checklist:

Formal qualifications (including professional registrations):

  • First degree in chemistry, environmental science, or a similar discipline.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of environmental management experience in mining or associated industrial operations.

Additional knowledge:

  • HSE Officer Competency Certificate.
  • A valid Ghanaian driving licence (minimum class C).
