POSITION: Community Assistant (2 Positions)

Since 1999, Pure Earth has undertaken more than 150 global projects, focusing on research, training, and environmental cleanup. Through collaborations with public, private, and civil society organizations, we tackle toxic metal contamination, particularly from lead (Pb) and mercury, using innovative and evidence-based approaches. In Ghana, our initiatives have discovered more than 150 hazardous locations, with lead as a major pollutant.
Job Description
- Length: 3 Months
- Location: Northern Ghana (Tolon and Yendi regions)
- Reports to: Technical Project Supervisor
- Collaborative relationship with: Technical Program Manager and HQ team.
Pure Earth and CGD are conducting a pilot study aimed at evaluating the practicality of substituting contaminated cooking utensils and cosmetics to minimize lead exposure among children. This program focuses on homes identified with lead-containing items in the Tolon and Yendi districts of Northern Ghana.
Position Summary
The Community Assistants will be essential for connecting with nearby households, enhancing communication between the project team and community members, and aiding in different activities related to the pilot study. They will collaborate directly with families to raise awareness about lead exposure and help in executing interventions.
Main Duties
Community Involvement:
- Assist in the recruitment of families to take part in the pilot study according to defined criteria.
- Carry out home visits to clarify the study’s goals, processes, and advantages to possible participants.
Lead Awareness and Education:
- Provide informative sessions to involved households regarding the health dangers of lead exposure and the necessity of replacing contaminated cookware and cosmetics.
- Distribute health and hygiene products to households, emphasizing effective methods for ensuring a lead-free living space.
Assistance for Baseline and Subsequent Evaluations:
- Support the project team in gathering data during the baseline evaluation phase, which includes recording current cookware and cosmetic items.
- Engage in follow-up monitoring visits biweekly to assess compliance with study protocols and collect feedback from families.
Intervention Execution:
- Assist in providing lead-free cookware and cosmetics to chosen households and ensure they comprehend how to use them correctly.
- Collaborate closely with families to promote adherence to study protocols and ensure consistent communication about advancements and difficulties.
Gathering and Reporting Data:
- Document observations, input from households, and any difficulties encountered during the project’s execution, aiding in continuous evaluations of the program’s efficiency.
- Help in gathering reports regarding community engagement initiatives and results.
Qualifications and Experience Required
- A minimum of a Diploma in Public Health, Social Sciences, Community Development, or a similar discipline.
- Familiarity with lead exposure concerns or experience in promoting community health is beneficial.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, capable of interacting successfully with various community members.
- Capability to operate both autonomously and cooperatively within a team.
- Knowledge of data gathering techniques and strategies for engaging the community.
- Proficiency in English, Dagbani, and the local language pertinent to the study regions.
- Must live in the project area (Yendi, Tolon)
