POSITION: Group Social Performance Manager

Rainforest Builder is Africa’s premier tropical forest restoration company, with the purpose to restore one million hectares of damaged land to natural forest. We bring together the brightest scientists and foresters from around the world to form a specialist company dedicated to the large-scale reconstruction of tropical forests. We have well-established partnerships with Fortune Global 500 companies.

Rainforest Builder currently employs approximately 1,500 people across operations in Ghana and Sierra Leone. Our projects are all long-term (71 years or more) and large-scale (100,000 hectares or more). We are fully integrated, designing and carrying out all stages of the project lifetime, from design to seed collecting and storage, nursery management, silviculture activities, forest protection, and carbon/biodiversity data collection. Our projects are built to VM047 VERRA CCB standards.

Your Role

Climate payments to rural Sub-Saharan African people will be crucial to their economic success this century. The chosen candidate will shape this across Africa.

One of Rainforest Builder’s founders supervises the Group Social Performance Manager. Not a checked role. Innovative concepts and rigorous execution are needed to scale tropical forest restoration to millions of hectares through community participation.

Our West African projects will provide $500 million in benefits to locals under your direction. You will also translate complex global social standards into simple operational methods that our firm can use. You will work with our new project development team to launch new ventures and buy property using best practices. Also, You will oversee each location’s ESG Managers to ensure we positively impact our communities. Additionally, you will establish a monitoring and reporting system. You will verify VERRA CCB (the industry standard-setting body) and conduct frequent monitoring and verification.

You must enjoy fieldwork because you will travel frequently to our initiatives in Ghana, Sierra Leone, and abroad to stay current and productive.

Your responsibilities

  • Benefit Sharing: Responsible for Rainforest Builder’s social performance strategy, including designing, negotiating, and signing Benefit Sharing Agreements with local communities and then overseeing their successful implementation.
  • Relationships: Form relationships with relevant groups to help the economic growth of affected communities, such as those focusing on enhancing smallholder farmers’ yield.
  • Land Acquisition: Oversee land acquisition in accordance with World Bank Free Prior Informed Consent criteria, which include vulnerability assessments and, where appropriate, livelihood restoration plans.
  • Project Design: Play an important role in designing new projects in an equitable manner based on high-quality social baseline surveys, extensive stakeholder discussions, and ESHIAs.
  • Monitoring: Measure the socioeconomic impact of Rainforest Builder’s efforts in a scientifically rigorous and measurable manner, for example, through HH surveys.
  • In-Country Oversight: Dotted line oversight of in-country ESG managers, creating and implementing department-wide operational practices.
  • VERRA Compliance: Ensure that all projects achieve and maintain VERRA CCB certification at all times, including grievance processes and HCV assessments.
  • Thought Leadership: Establish and sustain Rainforest Builder’s position as a thought leader on social performance in the nature-based solutions market.
  • Expertise: Use the RB scientific advisory board (e.g., Professor Rachael Garrett of Cambridge University) to scan the horizon and keep on track.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of experience as a Social Performance Manager, Country Director / Deputy CD, Social Safeguards Specialist, Programme Manager, or an equivalent senior post.
  • Experience implementing operational processes that are compliant with World Bank / IFC performance requirements, for example, experience inside a forestry, agriculture, or mining company, or having worked in an iNGO at a senior level (experience in PS1 and PS5 in particular preferred).
  • Experienced with land rights and acquisition in Sub-Saharan Africa (or willing to learn about this issue)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a multidisciplinary and multicultural team across various jurisdictions and a considerable budget.
  • Completed a degree program in a relevant subject.
  • Working proficiency in English (necessary) and French (desired)
