POSITION: Head of Medical Affairs, SSA

Summary

The Head of Medical Affairs for Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) leads the clinical development, medical affairs, and pharmacovigilance teams in approximately 46 countries. Accountable for strategic and operational medical and patient safety elements across SSA, covering all phases of worldwide development and patient access support for pre- and post-commercialization, to maximize acceptable NVS product use and patient reach.

Major Accountabilities:

  • Designing and creating SSA’s long-term strategy and medical affairs roadmap to achieve medical affairs excellence across Global Health and SSA programs and portfolios.
  • Leading and overseeing the creation and cross-functional implementation of the long-term SSA medical vision and strategy; Also, contributing at the highest organizational levels to long-term SSA strategies.
  • Driving and supervising regional medical plan formulation and execution, including suitable points of integration across several therapeutic areas and ensuring local alignment.
  • Provide direction and leadership to establish new standards for all SSA medical affairs activities, including clinical trial protocols and scientific exchange/dissemination of information, and ensure compliant implementation.
  • Developing best-practice medical standards and ensuring local adherence.
  • Acting as a protector for high standards of compliance, ethics, and safety; placing patients at the center of all efforts.
  • Leadership of scientific engagement, education, and communication strategy and implementation in SSA markets.
  • Developing and cultivating long-term strategic alliances with medical professionals, Academic Medical Centers, Centres of Excellence, and other external stakeholders such as government agencies, national regulatory authorities, NGOs, medical societies, and patient groups
  • Improve patient impact by practically implementing our Access Principles and guaranteeing comprehensive outcomes measurements of programs and activities.
  • Provide oversight and direction to medical teams in identifying the challenges to accessing care within the SSA healthcare system and providing innovative solutions to address the barriers, gaps, and unmet needs of patients.
  • Maintain the strength, effectiveness, and appropriate skills of the SSA Medical Affairs teams. Create, nurture, and expand a sustainable, high-impact culture.
  • Complete adherence to ethical, risk, and compliance frameworks.
  • Role model ethical behaviour, exercise sound judgment and ideals.-based decision-making.
  • Create a trustworthy environment that pushes associates to accomplish their best.
  • As part of the SSA Leadership Team, leaders share best practices, expertise, and experience to influence regional strategies.
  • Contribute to talent strategy and implementation.

  • SSA Objectives (Achievement of patient reach, particular unit-related KPIs, people and organization targets, productivity targets, and any other medical-related objective agreed upon from the list above)
  • Culture (Our Voice, Team Perspectives, and Other People Analytics).
  • Strength of HCP linkages throughout SSA.
  • Shown advocacy and illness state awareness for pre-launch and launch products.
  • Innovations in digital and business process change. Minimum requirements:

Education:

  • M.D. is recommended. A board-eligible PhD in health sciences may be accepted, depending on local requirements.

Languages: Fluency in English, French, and/or the local African language is strongly desirable.

Work Experience:

  • 10+ years of medical practice and/or pharmaceutical medical/clinical development experience at the global and national levels. Ideally have expertise in developing nations, leading cross-functional and/or cross-divisional teams; Experience in branded and generic therapy development, strategy, and commercial operations.

Additional desired experiences include:

  • Superior leadership abilities, including the demonstrated ability to effectively lead and coach scientific/medical professionals and business-oriented colleagues of various skill and knowledge levels.
  • Scientific/medical research experience and a track record of scientific/medical publication are desirable.
  • In-depth understanding of the customer/marketplace, important dynamics, and key competitors’ expected strategies.
  • Successful medical career with cutting-edge scientific and clinical knowledge.
  • Excellent knowledge of local, regional, and national regulatory standards and processes, as well as relevant (CPO-specific) ethical and legal principles.
  • Strong connections with KMEs in regulatory agencies, customers, and/or the media
