POSITION: Health & Safety Coordinator

About This Role:
To help develop, execute, and oversee the site’s health and safety programs and activities.
In this role, you will
Standard, Procedure, and Program Development
- Facilitate the establishment and review of Health and Safety standards and procedures in accordance with site, Newmont, and local Ghanaian regulations and laws.
- Collaborate with department managers to plan, develop, and implement Newmont programs that link to the current Health and Safety strategy, thereby protecting employees from workplace dangers and preventing incidents/accidents.
- Encourage and support the implementation of new health and safety programs and practices.
Operational execution
- Facilitate inspections to ensure that Health and Safety rules and government legislation are followed at all times.
- Provide technical skills while examining health and safety incidents.
- Write reports that detail the findings of the Health and Safety investigations.
- Streamline health and safety audits, risk assessments, reviews, and inspections.
- Coordinate the integration of health and safety initiatives into production processes.
- Provide internal health and safety consultation services to Newmont line managers.
- Act as a team leader for task forces and teams as needed.
- Collaborate with site leadership to optimize on-site safety programs and systems.
- Facilitate post-activity reviews to determine whether all staff have received appropriate training and coaching to perform their responsibilities effectively.
Reporting, Compliance, and Continuous Improvement.
- Facilitate event investigations to identify control failures, primary causes, and necessary corrective actions.
- Identify potentially hazardous circumstances and notify the department owner for prompt action and rectification.
- Maintain and report health and safety records and statistics.
- Monitor, assess, and advise changes based on lead and lag Health and Safety indicators.
- Review internal and external Health and Safety reports for contractor areas that want improvement, and put in place strategies to reduce the incidence of unfavorable accidents.
- Highlight non-compliance infractions committed by employees and bring them to the department head’s urgent attention.
Stakeholder Management, Communication, and Capacity Development
- Assist line management with Health and Safety hazard identification exercises, risk management procedures, safety rules, regulations, and trends.
Staff Supervision
- Provide instruction and support to safety representatives in their respective departments.
- Provide instruction to supervisors in their respective departments.
Your Training, Skills, and Experience Checklist
Formal qualifications (including professional registrations):
- Bachelor’s degree in health, safety, or engineering.
- The National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) offers General Certification in Occupational Health and Safety.
Additional Knowledge
- Comprehensive understanding of local Health and Safety legislative standards.
- Good understanding of safety management systems.
- Strong knowledge and experience in risk management and loss prevention techniques.
- Additional auditing qualifications are desirable.
Experience
Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience as a Health and Safety Officer.
Technical Skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
- Strong computer literacy skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Effective dispute resolution abilities.
- Effective information monitoring and management skills.
- Excellent planning, organisational, and prioritisation skills.

Working Conditions
- The work is located on the Akyem mine site.
- The incumbent works in an office setting and makes regular visits to operating locations.
