Job Summary

The Strategic Communications Director, who reports to the Country Director, will be in charge of CARE Ghana’s communications and public relations strategy, to increase the organization’s visibility, credibility, and impact locally and globally. Her/his responsibilities will include developing and implementing comprehensive communication plans to successfully engage key stakeholders such as donors, government and corporate sector partners, civil society, the media, and the public, including during times of crisis. In addition, s/he will handle internal communications at CARE Ghana and coordinate with CARE International (CI) to maintain global alignment and information sharing. S/he will be in charge of public relations and engagement initiatives in Ghana that support CARE’s purpose and strategic objectives, as well as build a collaborative and informed internal environment.

Key responsibilities of the role

Strategic Communications and Public Relations Management

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy for Ghana that is in line with CARE’s mission, objectives, and goals, as well as identify and target important internal and external audiences to ensure targeted messages and successful communication channels.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive digital and social media plan to boost online visibility and engagement.
  • Create and implement crisis communication plans to successfully manage and minimize risks, as well as offer timely and accurate information during crises to maintain confidence and credibility.
  • Foster and maintain strong ties with local media sources and ensure consistent and accurate representation of CARE Ghana.
  • Develop and implement brand visibility strategies across all CARE Ghana locations and activities.
  • Monitor and evaluate important indicators to help inform and alter tactics as needed.

Content Creation and Management

  • Manage the creation of high-quality content, such as reports, articles, press announcements, media advisories, social media postings, fact sheets, project briefs, and multimedia elements.
  • Work with program teams to create captivating tales that highlight CARE Ghana’s impact and promote the CARE brand.
  • Create and disseminate internal newsletters, updates, and announcements to keep employees informed about important changes and projects.
  • Ensure consistent branding and messaging across all communication channels, including email.
  • Oversee the management of CARE Ghana’s content repositories on CARE Images and elsewhere to guarantee simple access to archived materials while protecting sensitive data.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Global Communication Coordination
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, such as CARE’s worldwide communications, marketing, and fundraising teams, relevant donors, and government and partner counterparts.
  • Coordinate and support the Community of Care Advisory Forum’s internal and external involvement efforts.
  • Initiate, coordinate, and support public events, campaigns, and advocacy actions led by CO and project teams.
  • Contribute content to worldwide campaigns and initiatives, ensuring that CARE Ghana’s views and triumphs are recognized.
  • Oversee the management of CARE Ghana’s online presence, which includes LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
  • Internal Communications and Capacity Building
  • Create and manage internal communication strategies to keep all CARE Ghana workers informed and engaged in all parts of our work.
  • Organize and lead internal meetings, town halls, briefings, and webinars to build a collaborative, transparent, and accountable organizational culture throughout all units.
  • Manage CARE Ghana’s internal WhatsApp groups, as well as its pages on CARE Shares, Workplace, and other internal communication platforms.
  • Establish, lead, and mentor a high-performing communications team, as well as provide technical supervision for project-based communications personnel.
  • Ensure that communication team members and relevant programme workers continue to develop professionally and personally to encourage functional excellence in strategic communications at CARE Ghana.

Ethical Compliance and Other Duties

  • Ensure awareness and adherence to all applicable CARE policies and guidelines, including but not limited to safeguarding, fraud prevention, and protection.
  • Ensure that all communication and public relations initiatives are consistent with organisational and sector-wide ethical standards and principles, such as CARE’s informed consent and ethical storytelling policies, as well as donor laws.
  • Monitor relevant trends in the organization and sector, and recommend/execute changes to CO policies, procedures, and practices to increase awareness and compliance.
  • Monitor and swiftly handle any ethical concerns or violations under established processes.
  • Act as a spokesperson for CARE Ghana and perform additional activities as directed by the Country Director. A thorough understanding of strategic communications, including the creation and execution of communication plans.

Required Skill or Experience

Knowledge

  • A thorough understanding of strategic communications, including the creation and execution of communication plans.
  • Knowledge of local media rules and regulations, as well as an awareness of cultural context.
  • A thorough awareness of the media landscape, including local, national, and worldwide venues.
  • Knowledge of the non-profit sector, especially in terms of international development and humanitarian help.
  • Understanding the problems and opportunities for advancing social justice.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing strategies such as SEO, SEM, and analytics.
  • Understanding of ethical norms and best practices in communication and public relations.
  • Understanding compliance standards, such as data protection and privacy regulations.

Experience

  • A minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience in strategic communications and public relations, preferably with multinational organizations and non-profits.
  • Proven expertise in public relations, media relations, and crisis communication management, as well as a well-developed media contact network.
  • Experience with social media platforms and tools, including the ability to use them to increase engagement and awareness.
  • Expertise in managing communications activities throughout a worldwide organization.

Education

  • A bachelor’s degree is required in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a similar profession.
  • A master’s degree and/or postgraduate certificates in strategic communications or public relations are desirable.
