About the Fellowship

The fellowship gives journalists time away from daily deadlines. Fellows design an individual project and gain access to University of Michigan faculty and resources. They also join private, off-the-record seminars with newsroom leaders and experts. In addition, workshops build professional and leadership skills. Fellows travel abroad to study the forces shaping news coverage. Spouses and partners may join activities and audit courses.

A specialized track, the Great Lakes Local News Fellowship, supports two journalists. They build local news ventures serving Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, or Wisconsin. That track is open only to U.S. applicants with a plan to stay and serve a community in those states.
