POSITION: Field Program Accountant

The International Republican Institute (IRI), an international non-governmental organization (NGO) registered in Ghana, is seeking resumes and CVs for a Field Accountant to support the Institute’s Ghana programs’ financial and administrative operations.

As needed, he will collaborate closely with the Institute’s Program Accountant in Washington, D.C., on IRI accounting and compliance issues. S/he will be in charge of IRI’s finance and procurement systems and processes in Ghana, as well as program logistics and office administration as needed.

This role is situated in Accra but may require travel to other parts of Ghana on occasion.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Complete IRI and funder reporting obligations accurately and on time;
  • Manage payments to field offices, vendor and partner questions, and invoice processing.
  • Compile monthly rolling budgets for the field office and keep track of daily expenses, reconciliations, and bank transactions.
  • In JAMIS, review and record field office expenses, and ensure that advances are reconciled.
  • Payroll preparation and processing for local employees;
  • Prepare all statutory returns required by the respective government authorities (e.g., VAT, NSSF, NHIF, PAYE).
  • As the main point of contact for annual audits,
  • Prepare financial reports for government entities, including the Authority for Civil Society Organizations;
  • Ensure that field office property is handled securely and that the office inventory is kept up-to-date regularly.
  • Manage field office procurement processes following IRI and funder specifications;
  • Keep abreast of any changes to the Government of Ghana’s statutes, regulations, or recommendations about financial reporting.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of funder and IRI policies and procedures on grant compliance and oversight.
  • Assist the Resident Program Director with human resource management and IRI compliance with local regulations and procedures related to the organization’s registration status.
  • Ensure that field office personnel are well-versed in IRI accounting standards and processes, and give training as needed.
  • Travel as needed to assist with the accounting and procurement needs of the field office;
  • Any other tasks allocated by the Resident Program Director to support IRI’s activities in Ghana and around the world

Qualifications and Experience Desired

  • A bachelor’s degree from a university, ideally in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, and membership in the Ghana Institute of Chartered Accountants.
  • A minimum of three to four years of relevant professional experience in accounting, preferably with an international non-profit organization or a USAID donor-funded project;
  • Understanding of and familiarity with US government laws and regulations
  • Fluent in written and spoken English (fluency in another local language is an asset);
  • General accounting principles and bookkeeping knowledge are required.
  • Knowledge of the JAMIS Prime accounting system;
  • Computer skills and knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite as well as basic accounting software packages are required; and
  • Must be able to travel to different environments for extended periods of time and work independently as well as as part of a team.
  • Strong time management, organizational, and communication skills, as well as ingenuity and the ability to manage several activities concurrently and efficiently are required.

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting or a related subject is required.

Experience Required

  • 3-4 years

  • Knowledge of the JAMIS Prime accounting system;
