ROLE: Small Business Development Officer (SBDO)

About The Company

The Vibrant Village Foundation (VVF) is a private foundation with its main office in Portland, Oregon State, U.S.A. The Foundation was started in 2010, and it helps poor and marginalized communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America with Agriculture, Livelihoods, Health, Education, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene programs through direct help and grants.

Since it began, VVF has helped programs in more than 22 countries. In Ghana, the Foundation has done a lot to help the Fielmuo community in the Upper West region of Ghana get out of poverty. Fielmuo is in the Sissala West district. It is about 150 km north of WA, which is the capital of the Upper West region.

VVF has helped more than 34,000 people in 34 communities in the Sissala West and Lambussie districts get safe drinking water, good hygiene and sanitation (WASH), education, health care, and training in job skills. The “Integrated Program for Poverty Reduction and Social Transformation” (IMPREST) initiative was started by VVF in 2019.

Through programs like Education and Child Protection, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, and Livelihoods, Food Security, and Empowerment of Women, the goal of the program is to help reduce poverty, improve the health and resilience of people who are most at risk. We’re looking for someone with experience to fill the position of Small Business Development Officer (SBDO).

Job Summary

The person in this position will be in charge of the VVF Small Business and Enterprise Development Program. He or she will come up with and implement a business development model or strategy that helps small agro-based businesses grow and become financially stable.

Responsibilities

The person in the job has the following roles and responsibilities:

  • Lead and implement the development of a small business development strategy.
  • Lead the search for and enrollment of small and agro-businesses in the program.
  • Form and strengthen small businesses and associations.
  • Help small business owners connect with each other and form networks.
  • Help small business owners make and carry out business plans.
  • Mentor and coach small businesses to adopt best business practices, such as, but not limited to, liaising with government agencies.
  • Set up a program with a revolving fund to help small businesses, especially those owned by women who run their own households and smallholder farmers.
  • Set up and run the VVF mobile business incubation center concept.
  • Create training materials and do regular capacity building for small business owners.
  • Document and share success stories, best practices, and lessons learned from program implementation.
  • Make tools for keeping track of how small businesses are doing and use them.
  • Participate in project accountability platforms, such as the project steering committee and staff review meetings.
  • Form partnerships with the Business Advisory Centre at the different district assemblies and other actors in the district and region.
  • Write weekly, monthly, and activity-based reports and give them to the supervisor.
  • Represent VVF at meetings with stakeholders, working with supervisor(s).

Needed Qualifications and Experience

Background and experience of the person in charge

  • A degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Accounting, Banking and Finance, Development Studies, or an equivalent amount of work experience.
  • At least three years of experience in a similar job with a non-profit group.
  • Be able to ride a motorcycle for long distances in remote areas.
  • The ability to work with people of different races and cultures.
  • Analysis and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to make good decisions.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and timeliness in carrying out assigned duties.

Qualifications Required

  • Must be able to speak and write in English.
  • Must be able to speak Sissali and/or Dagaare.
  • Must have a strong desire to improve the lives of families in rural areas.
  • You must know how to use Word, Access, and Excel on a computer.

Location: Fielmuo (close to Hamile and Gwollu)
