Fully Funded 2024 Abel Visiting Scholar Program – Norway

As part of the Abel Visiting Scholar Program 2024, Norway, candidates have the opportunity to participate in post-doctoral training at one of Norway’s universities while receiving full funding for their studies.

Description of the scholarship:

For international students, the fully funded Abel Visiting Scholar Program in Norway is available in 2024. The grant enables students to enroll in Post Doctorate level programs in mathematics offered by the International Mathematical Union at Norwegian universities. The scholarship must be applied for by December 31, 2023.

Collaborations between mathematicians from developing nations and their international counterparts are encouraged via the Abel Visiting Scholars Program. The program gives mathematicians the chance to spend a month working with a foreign research partner.

The applicant must show evidence of financial support from the host institution to cover living expenses past the first month if the visit lasts longer than one month.

This program is specially designed to give post-doctoral mathematicians the opportunity to take a research sabbatical while still in the early stages of their careers. This research sabbatical is an essential addition to their teaching and other academic tasks, enabling them to maintain a successful research program in addition to their responsibilities.

The International Mathematical Union’s Commission for Developing Countries oversees the Abel Visiting Scholar Program, which is wholly supported by the Abel Prize in Mathematics. The program typically awards up to three fellowships annually, giving talented mathematicians from developing nations plenty of chances to take advantage of this valuable opportunity.

Benefits of the scholarship

Only the applicant is eligible for the grant, which has a maximum monthly value of 4,400 EUR (5,000 USD):

1 . Travel expenses

• up to the cost of an economy class round-trip flight from the applicant’s workplace to the host’s.
• Grantees are instructed to make their own flight arrangements during the outbreak. As long as invoices are submitted, the flight fees may be transferred before booking or paid after.
• (Public) transportation (surface transportation by rail or bus between the candidate’s headquarters and, if necessary, the city/town where the host institution is located and the nearest city where the airport is located). Maximum four (4) taxi fares between the home and the airport/railway station (upon submission of receipts) may be permitted (both upon arrival and departure).
• Any hotel stays required by the applicant before departure or upon arrival must be disclosed in the budget information. Only one (1) night, including arrival and departure, may be covered by the award.

Basic living expenses for the first month (daily allowance based on local cost of living, including all additional living expenses and the cost of public transportation). Please click here for a list. The daily sum will be less if the lodging includes breakfast or any additional meals.

5. The expense of lodging in the host nation;

a hotel is acceptable for up to 4 weeks if the host states that no guesthouses or rental apartments are available. You must hire an appropriate apartment or guesthouse if you intend to stay for more than four weeks. Cash payment receipts for lodging expenses are not accepted! You must use a trackable transfer method to pay.

The grantee is required to keep all receipts for lodging, travel expenses, insurance, up to four taxi receipts, and boarding tickets and mail the originals to the CDC/IMU Secretariat via regular mail.

If you visit the host country during a national holiday and the institution is closed (for example, over the holiday season), you will not be reimbursed for your basic living expenses, but your lodging expenses will be covered.

Please be aware that requests for additional travel (such as to attend conferences or workshops during this period) are not covered by the grant in terms of travel, lodging, or living expenses. These expenses must be met by the grantee or the institution serving as their host. The expense of living and housing only extends to the research period. The award cannot be used to cover living or lodging expenses if the grantee travels overseas for personal or other reasons unrelated to the research visit.

Two payments are made for the grant:

• Prior to departure, the first payment is made for the host country’s lodging, travel insurance, visa, airport transportation, and 50% of the cost of living.
• After the visit, a second payment is due for the remaining living expenses.
• The second payment cannot be started until the report, images, and all bills have been sent to the IMU Secretariat.
• Before the second payment may be started, the activity and financial report, photos, and all invoices must be given to the IMU Secretariat.
• Please take note that, with the exception of living expenses, a summary of the expenses must be included in the financial report and must be accompanied by the actual invoices and boarding passes.

Two weeks following the conclusion of the research visit, the financial and activity report must be forwarded to the IMU Secretariat, CDC Administration.

Unused money must be given back to CDC/Abel money.

Nationalities Eligible:

• International students from impoverished nations are eligible for this grant.

Qualification Standards:

Candidates need to;

• possess a math Ph.D. at the time of application;
• be based in a developing nation (as determined by IMU) at the time of application
• Work at an academic or research institution
• have just begun their professional careers; more specifically, the applicants should
• not yet have a full professorial status but yet have a working contract at a university or college
• be younger than 35 on the deadline for applications.

A person with a broken career pattern may have their maximum age raised by up to three years. This should be mentioned in the application along with an explanation for the irregular career path. We especially invite applications from female mathematicians.

Process for Applying:

Application deadlines must be met at least four months in advance of the desired start date. Every four months, the selection committee will evaluate the applications before selecting fellows. The Abel Visiting Scholar Recipients page makes a note of the outcome.

Applying deadlines are these:

A visit between

• September 1 and December 31, 2023, must take place by April 30, 2023.
• Visits between January 1 and April 30, 2024, must be made by August 31, 2023.
• For trips between May 1 and August 31, 2024, the deadline is December 31, 2023.

Your application will not be accepted if it is incomplete by the deadline and will not be evaluated.

Costs associated with COVID-19 testing, quarantines, and immunizations may be funded by the CDC upon request in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
