For Ghanaians who have decided to pursue higher education in the United States, you should know that the procedure it takes to get admission into any of the universities does not come easy.

Now the question to answer is how do I apply for admission to any of the universities in the USA. Luckily for us, we are in an era where the Internet has a lot of answers to every question.

These are a few guidelines to guide you whether you now starting your application process or you are almost through with it.

One of the ways you can apply for an undergraduate degree in the US is to pass your WASSCE as this is a confirmation that you have completed your secondary or high school education.

Those with the International Baccalaureate or A level certificate are sometimes considered for direct admission. However, you should note that not all colleges accept these certificates hence, the need to inquire before applying to the colleges.

English Language requirements

While some colleges do not require TOEFL and IELTS scores, others do request for it to be sure you have a full grasp of the language that is speaking,  reading,  writing, and understanding it.

Students visa requirements

  • You will need to apply for a student visa if you plan to study in the US. It is advisable that you begin the process earlier before the start of the academic year.  This is because it is time-consuming. There are specific visas for students,  there is the M1 for those enrolling in non-academic institutions like Vocational or training studies and there is the F1 which is the most common one required by universities, colleges,  or private secondary schools.
  • Additionally, you need to prove that you are eligible for the visa,
  • Also, you need to provide your financial statement to show that you are capable of catering for your tuition, room, food, and living allowance
  • However, if you are being sponsored by your parents, they need to prove you are their child by submitting your birth certificates which have your name and that of your parents.
  • In addition to that, your academic records or transcript ascertain your readiness for the academic year.
  • Importantly,  attend your visa interview and make sure you are on time.

Writing your admission essay

This is one of the challenging parts when it comes to applying for admission outside Ghana. In writing your essay you need to make sure that you are addressing what you have been asked.

The essay should be compelling to leave a good impression.  Above all make sure you stay true to yourself. Do not be someone you are not because most colleges are looking for people who are authentic and are more than what their grades are showing.

In conclusion, ensure that you check in with your school’s website to know the necessary documents you may need and what other guidelines they have for you as this write up is not exhaustive
