Common Causes of Failing an Exam and How to Avoid Them

Education is seen as one of the most important resources for the development of man. Having access to quality education prepares one with the right knowledge,  skills, and exposure to be successful in life.

A lot of importance is placed on education because it is the bedrock of development in many societies. It is not surprising then, that exams play a role in education.

Exams are the deciding factors for many things including the school you will study at, the kind, of course, you will be offered, and even your dream job. Many become anxious when they are faced with failure in the pursuit of their education.

Also, many people always have a reason they could not excel in their exams most times it is due to an internal or external factor. We will delve into a number of reasons why students fail their exams and how they can avoid them.

Major reasons students fail their exams

The first of these is a lack of preparation. Confucius once said, “Success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation, there is sure to be a failure”. Most of the time students are not ready for the exams so they go into the exam hall with timidity despite having the requisite knowledge.

Lack of preparedness includes not reading your lecture notes, not studying past questions, not reading beyond what was taught in class and not researching.  When one comes prepared to the exams hall, they have that assurance that the job will be done.

Also, a lack of good time management is why most students fail. Many a time, students decide to tackle the difficult questions before moving on to the easiest ones. What they fail to understand is that the test seeks to see how fast their brains can analyze information within a given time. So it might be a student is ready for the exams, but then the pace at which they answer or the type of question they answer is what takes a huge chunk of their time.

Another reason is being overconfident. Being confident is great but having an overdose of it is what one should be careful of. This is because you become overwhelmed to see the little details that can make a difference in your work. Most often, in a bid to show they are more knowledgeable than their lecturers or examiners, they ignore instructions and do things their way closing their eyes to important information regarding the exams.

Additionally, a lack of interest is a cause for failure amongst students. One tends not to put in much effort or time into something they are nor interested in. This translates that the outcome of their performance will be poor. There is no way a student who has an interest in a course will perform abysmally.

Last but not least, not answering the question well. It is one thing to know the answer and it is another to know how to word it to make sense to the examiner. If an answer is not articulated well or is not written clearly and concisely the examiner will find it difficult to award the full marks.

How to pass your exams

If you want to excel in your exams follow the tips below

  • First, prepare yourself adequately for the exams. Draw a timetable that fits your way of studying.  Make sure you read beyond what you have been taught in class and do not leave anything for the last minute.
  • Secondly, you can look out for some past questions and solve them. Look at the trend of the questions and try answering it within the time frame given.
  • Again, you can organize study dates with your friends. Often, having a group study offers you different perspectives on a topic and it helps in the retaining of information.
