ROLE: National Crop Scientist/Agronomist
Job Description
Support to Soyabean Development in Ghana is a project that is being done in Ghana as part of the One Country, One Priority Product (OCOP) initiative of the FAO’s Global Programme on Green Development of Special Agricultural Products. The project uses green production technologies, green processing, and green marketing to use soya beans’ potential to help small actors become more resilient and improve their lives.
The OCOP soybean development project is being run by FAO Ghana. The FAO representative to Ghana is in charge of the project overall, and the assistant FAO representative/head of programs and the Lead Technical Officer (LTO) are in charge of the technical side.
The goal of the project is to make it easier for smallholder farmers to use green production, good agronomic practices when growing soya beans, green processing and storage, and soybean-based nutrition to improve the nutrition of households. The project is being run directly with the Directorate of Crop Services of Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), as well as the East and West Gonja Districts Department of Agriculture, which is part of the Savannah Regional Department of Agriculture.
Lines of Reporting
The FAO Representative to Ghana will be in charge of the Crop Scientist/Agronomist. The Assistant FAO Representative to Ghana and the Lead Technical Officer will help them with their work.
Focus on the details
The Crop Scientist/Agronomist will work with other technical members to contribute to FAO’s strategic framework; BP4 (Small-scale producers’ equitable access to resources) by trying to give women and men in soya bean production better access to financial and economic resources, markets, services, information, education, and technologies; and BL1 (Gender equality and rural women’s empowerment), which will help make rural areas more inclusive and transform them.
The goal of the project is to help the environment by promoting an agri-food system that reduces the effects of climate change by using smart ways to grow soya beans and builds the resilience of soya bean farmers. This will be done with the help of solar-powered irrigation systems, land development, and other methods (Better Environment BE1: Climate Change Mitigation and Adapted Agri-Food Systems).
Tasks and obligations
Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative to Ghana and the direct supervision of the Assistant FAO Representative in charge of Programs and Lead Technical Officer, the person in this position will do the following:
- Help train project partners and beneficiaries on better production methods and “Good Agronomic Practices” for growing soya beans;
- Help train project partners and beneficiaries on how to work together as a group.
- Help the community get involved and choose project partners and beneficiaries;
- Also, Help train the water users association on production, marketing, and financial management;
- Write letters of agreement, terms of reference, and bills of quantities to hire service providers;
- Support project activities and track progress according to the approved work plan;
- Finally, Make sure that project equipment, materials, and other necessary inputs are delivered on time and in good order.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
- Advanced university degree in agriculture, agronomy, agribusiness, or a related field;
- 5 years of relevant experience in project management; and at least 1 year of experience managing emergency food security and livelihood projects.
- Know enough English to get by.
- Be a citizen of Ghana or a legal resident of the country.

Technical/Functional Skills
- The job requires good technical knowledge of the soya bean value chains in Ghana;
- Extensive and relevant experience in project management and coordination;
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of inputs credit schemes, matching grants, VSLAs, market-oriented agriculture schemes, and water users associations.
- How much and how well the candidate knows how to manage computer programs like Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and statistical software.
- How good the candidate is at verbal and written communication, negotiation, leadership, vision, strategy, coordination, and teamwork.
- If the candidate has worked with small-scale farmers in northern Ghana, that will be a plus.
