EduSpots, a UK and Ghanaian organization, connects, trains, and equips volunteer community educators to offer transformative literacy and STEM opportunities in ‘Spots’ that focus on female empowerment and environmental action. We are creating community-based changemakers.
Since 2016, we have worked with over 250 local volunteers to help 50 communities develop and operate community-led and owned education spaces called ‘Spots’ and move to our ‘Dream Spot Model’. A global community-led education paradigm with network interaction is being developed.
Our 16-person Ghanaian team works part-time and remotely to create collaborative learning opportunities for over 15,000 students of all ages through our Ignite and Community Leadership in Development (CLEd) Programmes, which include leadership training for our EduLit, EduSTEM, EduKidz, and Ignite Girls clubs and locally designed education projects. About this Role
As our work expands in scope and reach, we are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced, and organized Communications Manager based in Ghana to oversee communications across our dynamic network.
We are looking for an exceptional individual who shares our idea of community-led education and can capture the change happening across our network while engaging existing and new audiences in our work. The candidate will be able to work with both staff and our network of over 400 Catalysts to develop their communication abilities, offering this role an exciting scope of influence.
The ideal applicant would be hands-on, capable of directly leading our social media platforms and creating content for our website and newsletter, while also collaborating with grassroots changemakers. At the same time, you will possess a high level of strategic thinking, allowing us to establish and strengthen the critical partnerships required to increase our influence.
The candidate will be responsible for managing a small team of part-time peer mentors and interns, as well as our full-time Graphic Designer.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Write, create, and supervise the creation of unique and captivating communication and marketing materials for a wide range of audiences, including stories, photographs, videos, fact sheets, brochures, and more.
- Creating and managing a content collection strategy.
- Directly managing our social media channels (including Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and X), website, YouTube, and newsletter.
- Developing strategic media partnerships in Ghana and abroad, acting as the primary contact for media outlets, and preparing press releases.
- Leading the training of all staff, peer mentors, interns, and Catalysts on our communications and branding requirements, while also developing their storytelling and content production talents.
- Supporting (or driving) the evolution of the communication and branding strategy.
- Supporting our book provision and resource procurement strategy by collaborating with literacy coordinators, local authors, and partners in this process.
- Supporting relationship growth in Ghana and beyond.
- Leading the creation of a communications curriculum for Catalysts, which is integrated into our leadership programs.
- Working with regional coordinators to create strong local Spot communications strategies that are consistent with our policies.
- Actively engaging the network and personnel in our social media and communications strategy.
- Overseeing our EduChamps network, which allows us to engage a larger range of interested stakeholders in our work; collaborating with an intern to administer this WhatsApp stream.
- Supporting the design of all important organizational publications.
- Leading communications for fundraising efforts including the Big Give and 10th anniversary celebrations.
- Ensure that all project communications meet donor-specific branding and marking requirements.
- Line supervising the graphic designer, communications peer mentor, and communications interns, as well as holding communications team meetings.
Required Skill or Experience
Knowledge & Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive marketing and communication experience, preferably with an NGO or other organization involved in development and social impact programming.
- Experience building and managing a brand, including successful messaging and a consistent appearance, feel, and tone.
- Extensive experience managing social media and communication platforms, as well as expertise in digital communication, particularly digital marketing.
- Experience working with others to increase their capacity, confidence, and ability to provide successful messages.
- Experience with media relations, including relationship development and media queries management.
- Experience working across teams and with colleagues to coordinate communications activities and successfully improve communication effectiveness for various audiences.
- Experience working in the non-profit sector, preferably with an education or youth focus.
- Experience managing a team efficiently to achieve high-quality results.
- Experience running fundraising efforts would be particularly advantageous.
- A thorough awareness of the crucial arguments in international development and education would be advantageous, especially when it comes to community-led development models.
- A degree in a related discipline to communications would be advantageous, but it is not required for this position.

- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, with a keen eye for detail.
- Highly digitally literate (e.g., competence with design software, video editing, and wider use of online digital tools).
- Playful – capable of communicating playfully and engagingly, inspiring our audiences and Catalysts to interact with our work.
- Hands-on – capable of directly creating material and handling a variety of communications responsibilities.
- Flexible and adaptive – capable of working in a rapidly changing and fast-paced workplace while balancing different priorities.
- A strong commitment to advancing educational justice and encouraging community-led change.
- A strong educational skill set, including the ability to engage people in change processes through the provision of resources and materials.
- You will be able and willing to travel to significant conferences and training events in Ghana to report them firsthand.
