Job Description.
Democracy International (DI) is looking for a Gender and Inclusion Specialist to work on a five-year Performance Accountability Activity in Ghana, which is supported by USAID. Based in Accra, Ghana, the project promotes sustainable public involvement techniques to increase accountability and quality of public service delivery in Ghana, as well as to deepen individuals’ relationships with their local governments. This will be a full-time position located in Accra, Ghana. This employment is solely available to Ghanaian citizens.
The Gender and Inclusion Specialist will oversee and design programmatic activities to strengthen the capabilities of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) representing a variety of Ghanaian identities, such as women, youth, people with disabilities (PWD), and other marginalized ethnic and/or social groups. The Gender and Inclusion Specialist will work with participants in all program activities, including political institutions, CSOs, and government officials, to help them better connect with civil society in the communities they represent.
Essential Job Duties
- Provide technical leadership in developing the programmatic approach to increase the capacity of CSOs and community-based actors to incorporate inclusive development into the program;
- Ensure that all activities are inclusive of marginalized populations such as women, youth, people with disabilities, and impoverished communities, and give technical assistance with activity implementation.
- Improve the equitable provision of services to vulnerable groups, while also raising their voices publicly to advocate for required improvements.
- Train community leaders and government officials to incorporate the voices of these communities into their policy improvements.
- Involve important stakeholders in actions that strengthen the ability of CSOs and other groups;
- Document and facilitate the dissemination of program success and difficulties to local stakeholders.
- Oversee partner technical work as needed.
- Provide training and technical help to partner organizations.
- Educate staff on inclusion and equity in monitoring, evaluation, and learning activities.
Required Skill or Experience
- At least five (5) years of expertise in local governance, social accountability, gender empowerment, and democracy support, including knowledge of Ghana’s political context. A Master’s degree is preferable.
- Strong expertise in community development and project management, with a focus on women.
- Expertise in inclusion analysis and CSO capacity building.
- Deep understanding of the best practices, approaches, and methodology in programs related to equity, inclusion, and youth engagement;
- Experience working in institutions with a focus on meeting the needs of marginalized communities in civil society;
- Experience and commitment to locally-led development approaches (e.g., co-creation, grant-making, cultivating collective action practices) and adaptive management processes.
- In-depth familiarity, understanding, and ability to successfully navigate within the Ghanian context;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to effectively coordinate with a diverse group of stakeholders and team members.
- Professional fluency in English is required.
- Excellent computer skills.
