Countries with Free Tuition in 2023 (Top 5)

Consider enrolling in colleges that are tuition-free, have modest tuition rates, or waive tuition if you are not eligible for fully-funded university scholarships. Various free/low tuition plans and tuition waivers are available for international students in nations including Norway, Austria, Germany, Finland, and Sweden.

1. Norway’s Universities with Free Tuition

Studyinnorway.no reports:

Most students, including those from abroad, do not pay tuition at Norwegian state universities or university institutions. All academic levels, including undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees, are affected by this. Nonetheless, students are required to pay a semester fee of NOK 300–600 each semester.

For a few specialized programs, usually at the Master’s level, some public universities and university colleges may charge tuition. Tuition is charged by the majority of private colleges for all of their programs and courses. However, the costs are typically much lower than those for equivalent studies in the majority of other nations. Also, the cost of tuition is the same for Norwegian and foreign students.

You should be aware that living expenses in Norway are greater than in many other nations. This covers the price of going to school. The annual cost of living would be between NOK 90,000 and NOK 100,000.

2. Secondly, Austrian Universities with Free Tuition

studyinaustria.at reports

In exceptional circumstances (such as for holders of particular scholarships, participants in exchange programs and university partnerships, and students from particular countries), an exemption from paying tuition costs or full/partial reimbursement of the tuition fees may be possible. More details are accessible on the university’s official website.

The average monthly cost of living for students in Austria is about 800 euros, which covers housing, food, and other ancillary costs.

3. Also, Universities in Germany with Free Tuition

International-studierende.de and study-in.de claim that:

Beginning in October 2014, tuition will no longer be charged at any German university, with the exception of Baden-Württemberg, for bachelor’s and subsequent master’s degree programs for all students, including those from overseas. In different Federal States, universities may charge administrative fees (about 50 euros) or a semester contribution.

This tuition fee structure might change in the future; check this page for the most latest information on tuition prices in the several federal states of Germany. In the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, tuition for degree programs leading to the Bachelor’s, Master’s, Diplom, and state exams is now €1,500 each semester.

Most Master’s programs in Germany require tuition fees, however, they aren’t as exorbitant as those abroad, unlike undergraduate programs.

On the other hand, Ph.D. studies are generally free at German universities. Ph.D. students must pay a semester contribution of roughly 150–200 euros each semester before they are forced to pay tuition after finishing their first six semesters. Doctoral students typically obtain a grant or work on a research project for pay (paid Ph.D. post).

5 . Scholarships for College in Swedish Universities

StudyinSweden.se reports:

Application and tuition fees are necessary for students pursuing bachelor’s or master’s degrees who are not citizens of the EU, EEA, a Nordic country, or Switzerland. The Swedish Institute and other Universities provide full and partial scholarships for international students in the form of tuition waivers.

In Sweden, the majority of universities and external funding agencies provide compensated possibilities for Ph.D. applicants. This means that if you are given a job as a Ph.D. candidate, you won’t have to pay any fees and will instead get paid a monthly salary.
