Canada Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) – Complete Guide

Permanent residents who are abroad and do not have valid PR cards must obtain a permanent resident travel document, or PRTD, to return to Canada. Additionally, a permanent resident travel card often only allows for one entry into Canada.

Canada Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) Eligibility Criteria

You can apply for a travel permit that allows you to enter Canada permanently if you are:

1. A permanent resident of another country who plans to travel back by boat, bus, train, or airplane
2. Lack of a legitimate PR card attestation to your status as a PR.

How can I apply for a PRTD?

You can apply for a travel document declaring you as a permanent resident if you meet the qualifying and residency conditions. To apply, you must send in a completed application together with any required supporting documents and other paperwork unique to your country or region.

You would also have to pay the $50 application fee, which is non-refundable. Additionally, you must provide proof in your application that you meet the requirements for permanent residency. If you wish to apply with your family, each member must apply on their own and pay the required fee to obtain a travel document that would grant them permanent residency. This law applies to all people, regardless of age.

Steps to Apply For Permanent Resident Travel Document

• Step 1: Using the IRCC tool, find the national forms and supporting documentation required for your application.
• Step 2: After assessing whether the documents are country-specific, fill out the required forms. In general, you would fill out and submit the following forms:

1. On Form IMM 5476, use a representative (where applicable). This paper needs to be signed in person by you and your agent if you want to engage a representation.
2. Form IMM 5475: Consent to Share Personal Information with a Designated Individual
3. Remember to fill out every section of the form. If something doesn’t apply to you, write “N/A” or “Not Applicable.” You risk having your application rejected or delayed if you leave out any information.

• Step 4: Following the completion of all the forms, pay the $50 application fee. You must attach your proof of payment receipt with your online or paper application. As previously mentioned, each member of your family must file a separate application and cover the required costs.
• Step 5: Submit your application along with any supporting materials. For those who apply online, all supporting documentation must be sent through the permanent resident site.
