Breaking|| Wontumi TV and radio caught for GHC300k power theft

The incumbent Regional Chairman of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiko’s radio and TV stations have been caught for power theft. This was revealed after the Electricity Company of Ghana embarked on its routine operation of detecting companies and individuals who are using electricity illegally.

Upon the routine operation of the power distributor, Wontumi stations and several businesses in Kumasi were caught using electricity illegally.

According to sources, Wontumi TV and Radio stations owe ECG more than GHC 300,000. Thus, the company has been accused of illegal connections.

According to sources of Starr News, officials of ECG went to the Media station and other businesses based on a piece of leaked information.

The source revealed that the regional manager of ECG in the Ashanti Region always makes sure the public affairs unit goes to the public whenever the company arrests people for stealing electricity power.

The source went on to say that when the politician’s power was disconnected the manager is silent about the issue. However, he is negotiating to cover the corrupt act because the stations are owned by a politician. The source lamented that the style of business management is why ECG is not achieving its revenue target.

In addressing the issue, the General Manager of Wontumi Communications Limited confirmed that ECG found the illegal connection. However, he stated that the meter was tampered with before the company purchased it.

Away Bus as popularly called went on to say that he does not have the bill at the back of his mind. He continued that ECG presented them with a bill of GHC 300,000 to pay. But later slashed it to one hundred thousand Ghana Cedis. Also, he shares shared his surprise at how the issue entered the media space.

He stated that “It will surprise you to notice that ECG has commenced collection of the debt. The first power we bought from ECG since the issue began the system deducted 40 percent of the money to recover the debt. This means we have started the payment process so why do you take us to the media?.”

Away Bus went on to say that he does not have any knowledge about tempered meters as he is not a technical person. Likewise, none of his technical staff did that. According to him, they are yet to inform the owner of the stations about the issue. This is due to the fact that Chairman Wontumi was busy with his campaign.

The Ashanti regional public relations officer of ECG Madam Grace Garshong was contacted to verify if she had knowledge about the matter at hand. But she denied having any knowledge about the operation conducted by the officials.

She said,  “I’m unaware of any exercise on the said radio station therefore I can’t speak to the issue. I will reach my bosses for any information on that,’’.

However, the Ashanti regional manager of ECG, Mr. David Asamoah confirmed the operation but refused to give details.
