POSITION: Physicochemical Laboratory Supervisor

About the Role

The job involves analyzing and interpreting data to make sure we meet quality standards for cocoa beans, products in progress, and finished goods. You will also manage the taste testing of products to ensure we meet customer needs, and you’ll oversee the practical work of taste panels. This position is based in Tema and reports to the Quality Assurance Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the inspection of raw cocoa beans and share reports with the necessary people.
  • Ensure all quality tests done during production are accurate and reliable.
  • Keep all essential equipment in good working order and properly calibrated.
  • Analyze taste test results, report findings, and ensure they meet customer expectations.
  • Identify training needs for your team and work with the Quality Assurance Manager to create training plans.
  • Conduct risk assessments in the labs you supervise and make sure they are properly followed.
  • Make sure enough lab supplies are always available and send monthly stock reports to the Quality Assurance Manager.
  • Prepare and present weekly and monthly reports to the plant Quality Assurance Manager.
  • Ensure that all quality management system procedures are fully followed.
  • Keep laboratory equipment well-maintained and record their status.
  • Manage group tests related to laboratory work.
  • Train laboratory technicians and production staff on testing procedures.
  • Help investigate complaints with the quality team. – Maintain various quality and food safety certifications for the factory.
  • Lead sensory programs by working with sensory teams at other locations.
  • Work on physicochemical projects assigned by the Quality Assurance Manager.
  • Analyze taste test data, report findings, recommend actions, and communicate results.
  • Help maintain all quality assurance procedures and suggest changes when needed.
  • Prepare and send product samples for business purposes to the right people.
  • Develop new taste testing methods and train taste panel participants.
  • Evaluate product trial results and provide useful feedback for improvements.
  • Maintain contact with external suppliers and manufacturers of lab equipment, with approval from the Quality Assurance Manager.
  • Fill in for the Food Safety Coordinator when needed, as directed by the Quality Assurance Manager.

About You

  • You should have a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or a similar field, with at least 2 years of related work experience.
  • You need to understand laboratory methods for food and sensory analysis and have knowledge of quality management systems like ISO 19001:2015.
  • You should be good with MS Office and SAP, and you must have strong communication skills (both speaking and writing).
  • You should be able to lead and supervise a team and handle pressure well.
