POSITION: Regional Researcher – Innovation Scaling and Partnership

Job Summary

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is looking for a scaling expert to join its Accra, Ghana office in the role of Regional Researcher – Innovation Scaling and Partnership.

Innovation scaling research and its application in agriculture is gaining traction within CGIAR, attracting considerable interest from donors, International Financing Institutions, and investors. Over the past seven years, IWMI has been developing effective strategies to accelerate the scaling of water innovations across agricultural, energy, and environmental sectors through action research approaches and interdisciplinary methods. This includes strengthening partnerships for scaling, enhancing capacities in public and private sectors, and fostering multi-stakeholder dialogue and learning.

The Regional Researcher – Innovation Scaling and Partnership will be responsible for leading adaptive innovation scaling research of water solutions in food, energy, environment, and climate sectors. This role involves mobilizing investments and interventions from the public and private sectors to foster transformation in land, food, and water systems across Africa.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead action research on scaling innovations across food-water-environment and energy sectors in various geographies and market systems.
  • Design conceptual frameworks for the co-design, implementation, and monitoring of scaling activities with public and private sector stakeholders.
  • Develop innovative methods to assess and create incentives for stakeholders to align their roles and facilitate collective action.
  • Coordinate and implement innovation scaling research projects in collaboration with partners across Africa.
  • Employ innovative techniques to collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data relevant to systems science and innovation scaling research.
  • Evaluate the sustainability and equity of scaling pathways and partnerships.
  • Present research findings to both scientific (journal articles, technical reports) and non-scientific audiences (blogs, policy briefs).
  • Contribute to the expansion of IWMI’s innovation scaling research portfolio with partners.
  • Identify and foster partnerships for enhancing public and private investments in scalable innovation.
  • Establish and maintain innovation scaling dialogues and platforms with national and regional stakeholders and research partners, including the private sector.
  • Develop and manage agreements with partners while collaborating with IWMI’s HR, Finance, and project management units.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

  • PhD in human geography, political science, sociology, development economics, business, or a closely related field pertinent to water resources management and agricultural innovation, along with 3 years of relevant post-doctoral experience; or
  • Master’s degree in the aforementioned fields with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in scaling agricultural innovations, value chain development, and financial ecosystems.
  • Proven ability to blend qualitative and quantitative research methods in areas such as:
  • Agricultural value chain analysis and market studies.
  • Innovation scaling partnerships, pathways, and processes.
  • Gender and social inclusion in value chains and innovation scaling.
  • Business models and financial modalities.
  • Enabling environments and innovation systems.
  • Experience in advising the private sector, governments, and stakeholders on agricultural development interventions and innovations.
  • Proven track record in leading successful grant applications
  • Skilled in developing scientific and non-scientific knowledge products (papers, reports, blogs) and conducting outreach (workshops, multi-stakeholder platforms).

Desirable:

  • Experience researching with private sector actors and agricultural financial investors.
  • Background in managing research for development projects with multiple partners in complex political and social contexts.
  • Proficiency in qualitative data analysis and analytical software such as NVivo or Atlas.
  • Experience in fundraising and engaging with international partners and donor communities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Essential:

  • Strong knowledge in applying technical, economic, institutional, and innovation system theories.
  • Proficient in developing and utilizing analytical frameworks for designing and analyzing innovation scaling from a systemic perspective.
