POSITION: National Doctor (Occupational Health)

The post is located in the Regional Office for Africa (RAF) in Accra, Ghana.
Reporting Lines
The National Doctor (Occupational Health) reports to the Medical Officer of FAO Health Services, CSLH.
Technical Focus
The National Doctor (Occupational Health) is in charge of implementing FAO health and wellbeing policies and guidelines in the region’s countries, including health awareness initiatives, healthcare facility assessments, mitigation of duty-station-specific health hazards, medical evacuation, sick leave, fitness assessments, and other tasks under FAO’s occupational safety and health policy, among other things.
Key Results:
Provide emergency medical and occupational health services to all employees and eligible dependents at the FAO Regional Office, identify medical facilities throughout the country, facilitate employee access to medical facilities, conduct workplace assessments to identify potential hazards, and serve as the regional focal point for medical evacuations.
Key Functions.
Clinical Activities:
- Provide emergency medical care in the office during working hours, including dealing with accidents or other emergencies caused by an employee or guest on FAO’s premises, and be available by phone in the event of an emergency
- Respond to inquiries from FAO personnel in the region in person or electronically (phone, video chat, email, and other telehealth methods), and refer them to specialized services as needed.
- Support and organize general health status certifications with Health Services for employees undergoing recruitment (‘Entry Medical Clearance’), those requiring periodic review (‘Periodic Medical Clearance’), mission/reassignment clearance, and Exit Medical Clearance.
- Maintain accurate, exact medical records for patients, with regular backups in the Cority system.
- Maintain strict secrecy regarding the patient’s medical records, patient management, and emergency care.
- Other tasks relating to this function and those allocated by the Medical Officer at headquarters.
Occupational Health Activities:
- Access and communicate with local medical facilities to ensure correct medical treatment is provided.
- Create a referral list and keep an updated list of reasonable and typical expenses.
- Monitor and verify the appropriateness, reasonableness, and typical character of large medical bills/treatments as needed, coordinating with medical insurance.
- Conduct workplace evaluations to identify potential dangers that could cause harm or illness to employees.
- Conduct frequent and methodical field visits to the region’s top priority countries, preparing and submitting periodic reports to the Medical Officer at headquarters on findings and offering remedies based on local ways.
- Conduct an assessment of local medical facilities in the country and duty station.
- When requested by FAO Health Services at headquarters, investigate areas of collaboration with health services of other UN System entities in the country to provide our staff with extra healthcare or improve existing services.
- Serve as a regional focal point for medical evacuations and medical travel, reporting to Health Services at headquarters to oversee the MEDEVAC case.
- Inform employees and employers about work-related health issues.
- Offer advice and information on local and national health and safety regulations. Assist the Assistant Director General/Regional Representative in developing policies and processes that comply with these rules.
- Create and implement plans for health promotion and disease prevention.
- Provide support to other United Nations Agencies in the duty station as needed, in accordance with the inter-agency collaboration procedures.
- Other tasks relating to this function and those allocated by the Medical Officer at headquarters.
Candidates will be assessed against the following criteria:
Minimum Requirements
- Citizens of the country of assignment.
- A doctoral degree in medicine, with residency training particularly in occupational health.
- Three years of relevant experience in occupational health and travel/tropical medicine. Valid license to practice medicine in the country of duty station, along with certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Proficiency (level C) in English and the native language.

Technical/functional skills
- The breadth and significance of experience in clinical medicine and occupational health, including travel medicine/tropical medicine.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; the ability to write clear and succinct reports and papers in English is regarded as a valuable asset.
- Excellent IT abilities (Office suite and any occupational health software); the ability to extract medical data from systems and generate statistics and reports is seen as a valuable advantage.
- Intermediate proficiency (level B) in French.
