POSITION: Communication Officer Consultant

Job Description
- Location: West Legon, Accra, Ghana.
- Duration: twelve months.
- Reports to: Country Director and HQ Communications team. Monthly salary range: GHS7,500 – GHS8,500, based on experience.
Role Overview
The Communication Officer Consultant will be in charge of creating and implementing effective communication strategies targeted at raising public awareness of heavy metal exposure dangers and the significance of adequate ULAB management techniques. This role will entail developing interesting material for a variety of platforms, managing media relations, promoting stakeholder participation, and coordinating outreach initiatives.
The consultant will use new communication approaches to enhance collaboration between governmental and non-governmental institutions, as well as empower local populations to actively participate in heavy metal pollution reduction activities.
Key Responsibilities
Media Engagement:
- Identify and establish relationships with media professionals and organizations involved in environmental health, waste management, and public health.
- Create and distribute press releases, media advisories, and other promotional materials that highlight project activities and accomplishments.
- Organize media events and news conferences to highlight project milestones or critical issues about lead exposure.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Actively engage stakeholders, such as government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community organizations, and local leaders, to foster collaboration and increase project visibility.
- Plan and coordinate outreach efforts, workshops, and community events to promote awareness about heavy metals like lead contamination and exposure risks.
- Facilitate dialogues and meetings to collect stakeholder feedback and form partnerships to support safe recycling activities.
Social Media Management:
- Create and implement a comprehensive social media strategy that is aligned with project objectives.
- Create and schedule interesting material for multiple platforms (e.g., Instagram, X, Facebook) to increase awareness of lead poisoning and ULAB management.
- Monitor, analyze, and report on social media performance, modifying techniques as needed to improve audience engagement.
Design of communication materials:
- Create useful and visually appealing communication pieces, such as flyers, posters, and brochures, depending on the project’s essential messages.
- Collaborate with project team members to ensure that all materials adhere to brand and messaging guidelines.
Production of Audiovisual Material:
- Plan, script, and oversee the creation of two short educational videos that emphasize lead exposure hazards and the benefits of effective ULAB management.
- Create a radio advertisement campaign to reach a larger and more diversified audience, assuring effective messages on lead poisoning avoidance.
- Create billboard advertising campaigns to disseminate critical project messaging in public places.
Reporting:
- Create regular reports on project operations, communication activities, media coverage, stakeholder participation, and social media analytics to evaluate the impact and efficacy of communication efforts.
- Update and report to the Country Director on successes, problems, and recommendations for enhancing outreach tactics and activities.
Key Deliverables
- Social media content calendar and engagement reports.
- Press releases and media outreach resources.
- Communication materials (5,000 flyers and 1,000 posters) were created.
- Four instructive videos were made and distributed.
- Completed radio commercial and billboard designs.
- Bimonthly communication activity reports that highlight results, assessments, and stakeholder engagement efforts.
Required Skill or Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, media studies, public relations, or a closely related discipline.
- A minimum of 3–5 years of experience in communication roles, ideally in public health, environmental health, or non-profit settings.
- Proven experience managing social media platforms and campaigns.
- Experience in media relations and working with journalists and media organizations.
- Proficiency in designing communication materials and creating audiovisual content.
- Excellent writing, editing, and vocal communication skills.
- Experience targeting consumers in Ghana and understanding community engagement dynamics.
- The ability to collaborate within a team and interact with a variety of stakeholders.
