POSITION: Blasting Supervisor

About This Role:
Coordinate, direct, and provide technical assistance for all on-site blasting activities in a safe manner, as well as coordinate resource allocations to ensure that the activities are completed properly.
In this role, you will
Blast Operations Planning.
- Carry out short and long-term mine blasting programs.
- Set goals, objectives, rules, processes, and work standards for the region.
- Oversee and coordinate the weekly plan for launching blast schedules.
- Coordinate, prioritize, and assign blasting tasks to accomplish blasting target goals.
- Examine the explosion pattern designs to identify the explosive kind and quantity to be employed.
- Oversee the availability of blasting material and explosives on the prescribed blasting dates and times.
- Conduct pre-blasting inspections on blasting locations to ensure the safety of all equipment and personnel, as well as to avoid any machinery damage.
- Send all blasting requisitions to the General Foreperson for approval, and receive signatures from both the General Foreperson and the Mine Manager.
- Control and coordinate the activation of all pit sirens prior to blasting activities.
Blast Operations: Execution
- Consult with the General Foreperson – Drill and Blast to determine the best blasting areas.
- Install physical critical controls (such as demarcations, flags, and cones) before blasting.
- Coordinate and link the blasting team with the equipment needed to complete tasks.
- Schedule and manage all blasting activities, including monitoring and evaluating works-in-progress, and verify that all activities adhere to specifications, standards, and regulations.
- Identify chances for both short and long-term interval controls based on the blasting strategy, and adjust and change the shift as needed to fulfill daily target predictions.
- Oversee blasting activities, including identifying regions to be blasted, developing areas, and determining the necessary development rate.
Distribution of labor, materials, and equipment.
- Oversee all contractors assigned to authorized blasting work locations in the department.
- Actively coach and mentor the blast crew to provide technical direction and knowledge transfer.
- Hold blast crew accountable for their work by implementing discipline and corrective actions.
- Monitoring the crew’s key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Explaining the blasting plan to the crew and giving precise directions.
- Implementing continuous improvement efforts.
- Managing shift changes amongst crews.
- Oversee the administration and maintenance of the DIP plus system for measuring drill hole depth.
- Collaborate with ORICA to secure a timely and high-quality delivery of blasting material.
- Analyze daily blasting production and cost data to ensure that the department is meeting overall blasting production and budget targets.
- Coordinate blast equipment maintenance with the Mine Maintenance Division.
- Please submit feedback reports on blasting activities to the General Foreperson – Drill and Blast for review.
- Maintain proper records and archives for all blasting actions.
Blast Optimization and Continuous Improvement
- Improve blasting techniques by focusing on blast design, pattern prep, markup, and drilling accuracy.
- Booster placement in blast holes.
- Place explosive discharge hoses in blast holes.
- Explosive column height.
- Stemming from the blast hole.
- Reconciliation of explosives waste with blast patterns.
Blast Optimization and Continuous Improvement
- Evaluate and enhance blast processes based on benchmarks and coordination.
- Resources include explosion reports, timetables, blueprints, and plans.
- Having monthly blast improvement sessions with ORICA.
- Report and escalate any accidents or incidents that occur during the shift to the General Foreperson – Drill and Blast for urgent review.
Stakeholder Management and Engagement
- Send out messages to the nearby community about the blasting times and dates.
- Inform other Mine Operations divisions about the packing of blasting equipment.
- Communicate immediately with the Security department using two-way radio announcements to notify all personnel to leave the blasting area.
- Liaise with relevant Ghanaian government officials to ensure that all national norms and standards are met and followed during assigned blasting actions.
- Coordinate efforts with all departments to maintain the continuity of the entire mining operation.
- Obtain feedback from other Newmont divisions to find areas to improve blasting efficiency and production.
- Collaborate with the Learning & Development department to coordinate the receipt of training schedules and times for the national workforce.
- Ensure that the blasting shift work satisfies specified legislative criteria.
Health and Safety Management
- Check that the blast zones are safe and secure to promote worker health and safety.
- Adhere to internal Newmont health and safety standards.
- Follow safe blasting practices for both Newmont and Contractor staff.
- Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of all employees under his or her direction.
- Provide hands-on support during operations tasks and verify that operators follow safe work practices.
- Coordinate routine drill area inspections to discover and fix immediate safety, personnel, and production issues.
- Revert to the Engineering team to potentially adjust shift plans for a specific region based on work hazard detection.
- Hold monthly safety meetings and inspections.
- Lead the daily pre-shift staff debriefing.
- Attend the regular safety inspections and meetings.
Staff Supervision
- Create a proper shift work environment to drive Operators to attain their maximum effectiveness and production.
- Supervise direct reports by recruiting and selecting staff.
- Recommending the hiring of new personnel.
- Conducting crew assessments.
- Developing the team to execute to their full potential.
- Contributing to performance assessments.
- Participate in team performance management calibrations.
- Recommending additional/suitable training courses and development activities under Newmont’s people development program(s).
- Implementing staff training schedules.
- Coaching and mentoring employees.
- Improve communication with employees through regular feedback, contact, meetings, and briefings.
Your Training, Skills, and Experience Checklist
Formal qualifications (including professional registrations):
- Bachelor’s degree in mining/civil engineering, geology, or a similar subject.
Additional Knowledge
- Mine Foreman’s Certificate.
- Detailed understanding of numerous explosive types.
- Detailed understanding of blasting accessories.
- General expertise in heavy equipment operation.
Experience
- A minimum of 4 – 5 years of blasting experience in major open pit mining operations, including at least 2 – 3 years as a shift supervisor.
- Experience with electronic explosion.
