POSITION: Senior House Tutor

SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College is a lively, co-educational boarding school in Tema, Ghana. We provide high-quality pre-university education to students from SOS children’s villages around Africa, as well as those from the host nation, Ghana, and beyond. The school is looking for suitable applicants for the position of Senior House Tutor (Head of Boarding).

Role Overview

The Senior House Tutor has an important role in the school. The leadership team reports directly to the principal.

  • He/She is appointed to lead, direct, and supervise the House Tutors in ensuring that the welfare of students comes first; that rules, procedures, and duties are applied consistently across the hostels; that administrative arrangements are carried out competently; and, most importantly, that a spirit of unity, Pan-Africanism, healthy and cooperative relationships, and happiness are fostered within the student body within the Hostels.
  • The SHT is expected to be personable and friendly while remaining tough and fair in his or her dealings with students. The SHT works closely with academic campus officials to monitor students’ progress, which influences living in the boarding hostels and vice versa. Any problems discovered or emerging with any student in the Hostels must be reported to the Vice Principals or Senior Leadership Team. He/she should be familiar with the job description, school rules, student handbook, and any school policies.

Responsibilities.

  • Promoting the vision of the College as a home for intellectual and civilized people, as well as persuading others to embrace the College’s vision, mission, values, goals, and strategic direction.
  • Collaborating with the Deputy Senior House Tutor to establish and administer student boarding and well-being programs, as well as meet the hostel’s administrative obligations.
  • Monitoring quality assurance in the canteen’s services to guarantee that students are fed nutritional, ample, and wholesome meals in a clean environment, ensuring their physical and mental development into maturity.
  • Creating an environment that ensures the safety of all pupils and acting quickly to report any difficulties.
  • Collaborating closely with the PSHE Lead to improve life skills.
  • Coordinating day-to-day boarding services and programs, such as supervising, supporting, and guiding House Tutor duty teams and dealing with student concerns.
  • Providing feedback on the development and execution of boarding rules and guidelines in accordance with the College’s aims.
  • Fostering positive relationships with parents and ensuring that they understand and completely follow the Hostel rules and regulations.
  • Above all, serving as a mentor, guide, advisor, disciplinarian, and advocate for the pupils under his/her supervision.
  • Paying special attention to the requirements of SOS students who may be far from home, and assisting them in adjusting to the College’s culture, norms, and ethos.
  • Overseeing the prep system and keeping track of the students’ academic demands, particularly in the hostels.

TEAM DYNAMICS.

He/she will collaborate closely with the Deputy Senior House Tutor, House Tutors, Assistant House Tutors, the School Counsellor, the Senior Catering Manager, the Facilities Manager, the Administrative Manager, the Health Team, and Form Tutors to provide information, support, and ideas for improving services and student welfare and happiness.

He/she is the first point of contact for Prefects, SRC Executives, and House Tutors on duty when concerns arise.

The successful candidate will also collaborate closely with the Guidance Counseling team, Curriculum Management team, and subject-specific instructors, as directed by the Principal.

COMPETENCIES:

Education and Work Experience:

  • The minimum qualification is a first degree from a recognized university in an academic or administrative subject.
  • Training in Safeguarding or Child Protection is required.
  • Having a Master’s degree and experience with the IB curriculum is advantageous.
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in a similar capacity.

Personality:

  • The ability to maintain the highest level of integrity toward staff, kids, and parents in all situations, regardless of who is involved.
  • Ability to enforce rules and practices under established school policy
  • The ability to connect and collaborate effectively with students.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding or child protection techniques, with experience desired, and a desire to further develop in this field.
  • The ability to be proactive, fair, and consistent in any situation.
  • The ability to show care, compassion, patience, and tolerance.
  • The ability to multitask, stay organized, and adapt in a changing situation.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with and manage parental expectations in accordance with school standards.
