POSITION: Accountant 

Background:

Winrock International is a non-profit organization that works with individuals in the United States and around the world to empower the poor, expand economic opportunities, and protect natural resources. Winrock is undertaking the Making Advances to Eliminate Child Labour in More Areas with Sustainable Integrated Efforts (MATE MASIE) project, which will run until May 2025.

The United States Department of Labour (USDOL) funds the project, which strengthens capacity, connections, and accountability across child labour enforcement and monitoring within Ghanaian cocoa cooperatives. It also builds cooperatives’ capacity to support vulnerable member households directly and by connecting their members with other service providers.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Accountant will be in charge of accounting activities such as financial reporting, bank reconciliation, general ledger entries, auditing field office vouchers, and other general accounting responsibilities. He or she will also guarantee field-based adherence to donor and Winrock financial rules and procedures, regulations, controls, and reporting systems.

This is a local/national position and does not qualify for foreign allowances. Qualified applicants who live in Kumasi, Ghana are urged to apply.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform accounting operations such as financial reports, bank reconciliation, ledger entries, and other general accounting functions.
  • Assist the F&A Officer in implementing and maintaining in-country policies, procedures, forms, and record-keeping systems that adhere to Winrock International, donor, and Ghana government standards and requirements.
  • Assist the F&A Officer to maintain solid internal controls throughout the project;
  • Assist the F&A Officer in generating, recording, executing, and reconciling payments at all stages, such as preparing purchase orders, generating check and wire requests, entering data into financial management software (QuickBooks, Excel, etc.), and reconciling bank statements.
  • Assist the F&A Officer in developing monthly cash flow predictions and preparing requests to Winrock, as well as following up on fund receipts and bank reconciliation;
  • Help analyze all expenditure supporting documents for accuracy, relevancy, and validity under Winrock regulations, and ensure that expenses are reasonable, allocable, and required before payment is processed.
  • Prepare monthly payroll for staff, including assisting with the review of staff timesheets for proper signatures and allocation information; calculating all salaries and income tax obligations; and recording all relevant accruals, including fringe, bonuses, gratuities, etc. in compliance with signed employee agreements.
  • Help reconcile all bank accounts and petty cash at least once a month and report any inconsistencies to the F&A officer.
  • Monthly, reconcile liability and asset accounts and create supporting schedules and trackers.
  • Organize and keep all project financial and accounting records and files in line with Winrock policy, general audit standards (GAAP), and donor needs.
  • Responsibilities include submitting monthly financial reports to Winrock International
  • Regional office on time, uploading financial vouchers and supporting documents to the Winrock project filing site by the deadline, and doing other activities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a similar discipline.
  • Standards for the position include three years of accounting or auditing experience, preferably in a non-profit or international development setting, as well as knowledge of financial management and reporting standards.
  • Knowledge and expertise with accounting systems and packages.
  • Knowledge and comprehension of tax regulations and compliance
  • Demonstrates good judgment and professionalism, with decision-making experience and strong analytical ability.
  • Excellent Microsoft Excel abilities and expertise with accounting software (QuickBooks is preferred).
  • Experience with international donor regulations is preferred.
  • Precision and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to interact with multinational staff.
  • Strong knowledge of internal controls and accounting standards.
