POSITION: Customs, Excise & Trade Compliance Junior Manager

About the Role

This function is primarily responsible for driving trade compliance excellence by adhering to applicable global trade legislation, notably in African countries, as well as assuring compliance with Diageo’s Policies and Standards. The post will assist the African Trade Compliance Head by overseeing customs and excise issues in collaboration with in-market teams.

The role will also assist the Global Trade Compliance team with cross-regional projects and activities aimed at simplifying, automating, and standardizing ways of working, as well as providing support to the larger Group Tax to ensure compliance across the organization.

Accountabilities

  • Be responsible for developing, implementing, and supervising local processes under global standards established by the Global Tax team.
  • Assist the Regional Head of Trade Compliance in analyzing and interpreting government regulations, as well as taking action to identify potential needs for change.
  • Advise on trade compliance issues emerging from pre or post-clearance, customs classification, free trade agreements, and other Diageo functions; collaborate with external advisers when the interpretation or best solution is unclear.
  • Bring up important issues raised during pre- and post-entry audits and recommend necessary remedial steps; collaborate with the Global Tax Compliance team on long-term corrective actions to specific issues.
  • Support the Regional Head Trade Compliance team in identifying and delivering local projects for cost reduction and/or cost avoidance.
  • Coordinate the region’s risk management process under Diageo’s Global Risk Management Standards, with help from the Global Trade Compliance team;
  • Support the Regional Head during formal customs audits conducted in markets requiring regional/worldwide support; be prepared to engage closely with Customs Authorities where necessary;
  • Assist in the implementation of new programs such as AEO or associated compliance programmes in African countries;
  • Assist with regional CARM and GAR audits, as well as digitalization and transformation projects. Identify opportunities for automation and technology to improve regional trade compliance.
  • Support the Regional Trade Compliance team in delivering trade compliance training to various departments across African markets, fostering a culture of trade compliance among employees.

What Will You Bring?

  • Global Trade Governance Experience
  • Managing risk and overseeing customs and excise inspections and audits
  • 5–7 years of expertise in a worldwide Trade/Supply function in a worldwide multinational organization is advantageous.
  • Experience delivering domestic and cross-border technical guidance.
  • Effective project management and implementation skills.
  • Effective teamwork and interpersonal skills across cultures
