Information for host institutions

The organization where the applicant will hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship is known as the host institution.

For information on host institution eligibility requirements, please see the Eligibility section.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program depends on host institutions, which should only support postdoctoral researchers of the greatest caliber. When selecting candidates to recommend for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program, host institutions are expected to take diversity into account on a variety of levels, including research discipline, gender, official language (for Canadian host institutions), cultural background, and citizenship.

The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), a global initiative with the aim of supporting the creation and promotion of best practices in the assessment of scholarly research, has been signed by the three agencies. It seeks to mitigate the drawbacks of unintentional overreliance on journal publishing as the main yardstick of research output quality.

As DORA signatories, the organizations honor and acknowledge a variety of contributions while highlighting their excellence and significance. The DORA will be followed for peer review.

Before applicants are accepted, the institution’s president (or a person they choose) must give their approval.

The maximum number of applications that an institution may recommend is undefined. Institutions are expected to be extremely selective and to restrict the number of applications they approve due to the amount of collaboration that is expected between host institutions and applicants, the rigorousness of the selection process, and the fact that only 70 fellowships are awarded each year.

In addition to working with applicants, host institutions must show the following:

  • Firstly, the strategic application of the specified research program by the institution
  • Secondly, support from institutions for the planned research program
  • Also, the institution’s dedication to maximizing the applicant’s research and leadership potential and positioning them for leadership in a career involving a lot of research
  • Afterward, the institution’s knowledge of and commitment to any partnerships entailed in the planned research (for instance, studies that respectfully involve and engage Indigenous populations)

Applicants must submit two documents to the host institution to support their application:

  • a letter of support from the department
  • Supervisor’s statement

Please see the relevant sections under Enter proposal information and supporting papers for further details on these documents.

The selection committee that should assess the application is a decision that the candidate and supervisor must make carefully. See Identify Research Field for more information.

The following topics should be covered by applicants and host institutions early in the application process:

  • To begin with, the fellowship appointment’s specifics
  • Followed by, perks provided to postdoctoral researchers
  • Also, for any expenses related to the appointment (such as union dues and insurance premiums).
  • Additionally, the existence of any available research and/or other assistance
  • Besides that, the postdoctoral researcher’s obligations and rights
  • any further institutional regulations that may be relevant to the Banting postdoctoral researcher
  • any established policies and procedures relating to research (for instance, OCAP® for First Nations or any Inuit and Métis Peoples of Canada established policies and procedures; approvals for research involving the use of humans, animals, or biohazards)

In Canada, fellowships are often paid either directly to the postdoctoral researcher or through the host university. Research money or overhead/administrative expenses are not covered by the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program. The postdoctoral researcher is given a salary known as a fellowship.
