The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding, Ghana (WANEP-Ghana) is a non-profit peacebuilding NGO. It is a civil society institution in Ghana that aims to prevent, resolve, and transform violent conflicts through the collective and coordinated efforts of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), local and national state institutions, and individuals actively engaged in peacebuilding practice to avoid duplication of efforts and maximize resources for more effective conflict responses. The group aims to help Ghanaian communities cultivate a culture of non-violence, justice, peace, and social healing that will last.

Job Description

We are now looking for suitable individuals for the job of Early Warning Officer to run our National Early Warning System (NEWS) Center and assist with the execution of other initiatives across the country.

  • Job Location: Tamale.
  • Employment Duration: One year, subject to an annual review and renewal.

Job Responsibilities and Expectations.

  • The NEWSEarly Warning Officer is expected to undertake the following functions while working directly under the Programmes Manager (PM) and in close conjunction with the WANEP Regional Peace Monitoring Centre (PMC).
  • In coordination with the PM and WANEP PMC, coordinates NEWS monitoring, analysis, and reaction operations on a national level. He or she will coordinate with all the NEWS
  • Community Monitors to ensure that NEWS runs smoothly daily.
  • Facilitate the overall monitoring, analysis, and reaction activities associated with the National Early Warning System (NEWS) countrywide in a team.
  • Monitors and regularly uploads human security early warning data to the WANEP’s NEWS, ECOWAS WANEP’s partner eEarly Warning and Response Network electronic platforms – (ECOWARN) (ECOWAS), and the African Union Continental Early Warning System (Commission (AU-CEWS)
  • S/he will ensure that quality data is submitted on a regular and timely basis by Community Monitoring Team (CMT) members to NEWS and other WANEP-Ghana project platforms.
  • S/he will bridge the gap between NEWS and ECOWARN by ensuring that all necessary alerts or data are transmitted to ECOWARN.
  • S/he shall offer early warning data, information, and analysis upon request.
  • S/he will support various programs or initiatives at the secretariat as directed.
  • Maintains an up-to-date contact list of Community Monitoring Team (CMT) members, including phone numbers, email addresses, and Twitter handles.
  • Maintains an up-to-date project, district, regional, and national contact list of all stakeholders in the early warning organogram.

Required Skill or Experience

  • Qualifications and experience affect knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • A first degree in peacebuilding, peace studies, conflict transformation, communication, political science, social statistics, or psychology.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in peacebuilding, governance, or development.
  • Strong data analysis and discussion skills, as well as statistical data presentation and reporting.
  • Strong awareness of political economy, election dispute trends and dynamics, and previous election dispute management practices;
  • Ability to pay careful attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of database queries and the use of indications
  • Capability to create training materials and conduct workshop training
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with a great flare for report writing.
  • Ability to incur overtime to accomplish the essential functions of the employment, which may demand irregular hours.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (minimum requirements: Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access).
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical software, graphics, GIS, internet, and social media platforms.
  • Typing speed: 40 words per minute.
  • Experienced with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel application packages.
  • Must know how to use internet-based or online platforms.
  • Be able to use social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter professionally.
  • Direct experience with program planning, implementation, monitoring, and assessment.
  • Experienced in training preparation and workshop facilitation.
  • Must be a good team player, open to criticism, and results-oriented.
  • Must be peaceful, culturally and gender aware in contact and communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to form partnerships and program networks.
  • Willing to travel and work outside regular hours.
  • You must be at least 35 years old.
  • Expertise: A minimum of three years of expertise in conflict resolution, analysis of trends and dynamics in peacebuilding, governance, and development, as well as research and reporting.
  • Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is necessary in peacebuilding, political science, sociology, communication studies, peace studies, conflict transformation, development studies, or a similar discipline.
  • A Master’s degree in the aforementioned fields, as well as a certificate in Peace and Conflict Studies, Political Science, Social Statistics, Communication, and/or Management, will be beneficial.
