Understanding the Australian Parent Visa: Reuniting with Family In Australia

Many of us are reminded of the strong and unbreakable relationships that exist between family members. This day can be bittersweet for individuals whose parents live abroad. However, the Parent Visa scheme in Australia allows you to reunite with your loved ones. Here’s what you need to know if you’re thinking about assisting your parents with their migration to Australia.

Parental Visa Options

Parent Visa (Section 103)

A permanent visa option allows parents to live in Australia if the ‘balance of family’ requirement is met, which means that they have at least half of their children living permanently and lawfully in Australia as Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents, one of whom will sponsor the parents.

Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804)

This visa, like the Parent visa, is for elderly parents who are eligible for an Australian-aged pension. They must still pass the balance of family test and have one of their Australian children sponsor them.

Contributory Parent Visa (Subclasses 173 and 143)

This visa permits parents who meet the balance of family tests, are sponsored by one of their Australian children, and have the cash to ‘jump the queue’ and acquire their resident visas significantly faster than the Parent subclasses.

Temporary Parent Visa (Subclass 870) Sponsored

The Subclass 870 visa is a three or five-year temporary visa that allows a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or qualified New Zealand citizen to remain in Australia. Parents are not required to have a family balance in Australia.

Tourist Visa (Section 600)

For many, the permanent parent visa is too expensive, takes too long, or parents may not have a family balance in Australia. A tourist visa may be the best option. Permanent residents and citizens of Australia may invite their parents to stay for up to 12 months during an 18-month period.

Defined Key Australian Parent Visa Criteria

The Balance-of-Family Test

For Parent Visa applicants, the Balance of Family Test is critical. It is necessary for the parent(s) to have at least half of their children residing in Australia permanently and legally as permanent residents or citizens.

Support Assurance

Permanent visa categories necessitate the provision of an Assurance of Support bond by an Australian citizen who guarantees that the applicants will not claim any social security benefits, or that if they do, these sums will be taken from the AoS bond.

Health & Character Requirements

Applicants must pass medical exams and meet rigorous character standards, including police checks from any country in which they have lived for 12 months or more in the previous ten years. As parents get older, health problems arise. Having an illness or condition that will necessitate considerable expenditures or the use of scarce services will result in refusal.

Australian Parent Visa Waiting Times and Fees

There are numerous types of Parent visas. These visas are in two categories: non-contributory and contributory. They may also be classed according to an applicant’s age, as well as temporary and permanent residency. Processing timeframes and costs can vary greatly depending on the visa type you choose. A non-contributory visa has lower charges but longer processing delays. Contributory visas will produce the opposite result.

The processing time for a parent visa can take up to 30 years.

  • Contributory Parent Visas: These visas have shorter processing durations (up to twelve years), but they cost more, around $48 365 per parent.

Sponsorship

Parents must have their child (or another qualified sponsor) sponsor them for the visa.

The sponsor must be one of the following:

  • An eligible Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen.
  • Settled in Australia (legally and generally resident)
  • Capable of providing financial and social support to their parents for a period of time determined by the visa applied for.
